The Epistle of John the Legate – Chapter 3
1 And ye see, how great is the love of the Father towards us, who hath called us sons, and made us [such].
Therefore the world knoweth us not, because it likewise knoweth him not.
2 My beloved, now are we the sons of God;
and hitherto, it hath not appeared* what we are to be:
but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be in his likeness, and we shall see him as he is.
3 And every one that hath this hope from him, purifieth himself, as he is pure.
4 And every one that practiseth sin, perpetrateth iniquity;
for all sin is iniquity.
5 And ye know, that he was manifested to take away our sins;
and in him was no sin.
6 And every one that abideth in him, sinneth not:
and every one that sinneth, hath not seen him, nor hath known him.
7 My children, let no one deceive you:
he that doeth righteousness, is righteous, as the Messiah also is righteous.
8 And he that committeth sin, is of Satan;
because Satan was a sinner from the beginning:
and for this cause, the Son of God appeared, that he might destroy the works of Satan.
9 Every one that is born of God, doth not practise sin;
because his seed is in him, and he cannot* sin, because he is born of God.
10 By this are the children of God discriminated from the children of Satan.
Every one that practiseth not righteousness, and that loveth not his brother, is not of God:
11 because this is the commandment, which ye heard from the beginning, that ye should love one another.
12 Not like Cain, who was of the evil one, and slew his brother.
And why did he slay him, but because his own works were evil, and those of his brother righteous ?
13 And wonder not, my brethren, if the world hate you.
14 We know that we have turned from death unto life, by this, that we love the brethren.
He that loveth not his brother, remaineth in death.
15 For every one that hateth his brother, is a man-slayer;
and ye know, that no man-slayer can have eternal life abiding in him.
16 By this we know his love towards us, because he gave up his life for us: .
and we also ought to give up our lives for our brethren.
17 But whoever hath worldly possessions, and seeth his brother in want, and shutteth up his bowels from him, how is the love of God in him ?
18 My children, let us not love one another in words and in tongue, but in acts and in truth.
19 And by this, we recognize that we are of the truth;
and, before he shall come, we make our hearts confident.
20 But if our heart condemneth us, how much greater is God than our heart, and knowing all things ?
21 My beloved, if our heart condemneth us not, we have open countenances before God.
22 And whatever we ask, we receive from him;
because we keep his commandments, and do acceptable things before him.
23 And this is his commandment, that we believe on the name of his Son Jesus the Messiah, and that we love one another as he hath commanded us.
24 And he that keepeth his commandments, is kept by him, and he dwelleth in him:
and by this we understand that he abideth in us, from his Spirit which he hath given to us.

* vv. 2,9 n. John is addressing ‘gnosticism’ which taught that material was evil. They argue that Christ only appeared in spirit in JESUS.
This notion is implied by Dali’s “Christ of St. John of the Cross” painting, and similar artists of the period.

Creation Tuesday “The earth brought forth grass”

Genesis Chapter 1

1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth. 2 Now the earth was unformed and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep; and the spirit of God hovered over the face of the waters. 3 And God said: ‘Let there be light.’ And there was light. 4 And God saw the light, that it was good; and God divided the light from the darkness. 5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day. {P}

6 And God said: ‘Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.’ 7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament; and it was so. 8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And there was evening and there was morning, a second day. {P}

9 And God said: ‘Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear.’ And it was so. 10 And God called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters called He Seas; and God saw that it was good. 11 And God said: ‘Let the earth put forth grass, herb yielding seed, and fruit-tree bearing fruit after its kind, wherein is the seed thereof, upon the earth.’ And it was so. 12 And the earth brought forth grass, herb yielding seed after its kind, and tree bearing fruit, wherein is the seed thereof, after its kind; and God saw that it was good. 13 And there was evening and there was morning, a third day. {P}

#7 None commit adultery – The Ten Commandments

* Thou shalt not commit adultery. {S} *
Exodus Chapter 20

1 And God spoke all these words, saying: {S} 2 I am the LORD thy God, who brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt have no other gods before Me. 3 Thou shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any manner of likeness, of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth; 4 thou shalt not bow down unto them, nor serve them; for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate Me; 5 and showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them that love Me and keep My commandments. {S} 6 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh His name in vain. {P}

7 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. 8 Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work; 9 but the seventh day is a sabbath unto the LORD thy God, in it thou shalt not do any manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates; 10 for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested on the seventh day; wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it. {S} 11 Honour thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. {S} 12 Thou shalt not murder. {S} Thou shalt not commit adultery. {S}

Psalms 23 “He restoreth my soul”

Psalms Chapter 23 תְּהִלִּים

א מִזְמוֹר לְדָוִד: יְהוָה רֹעִי, לֹא אֶחְסָר. 1 A Psalm of David.
The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.
ב בִּנְאוֹת דֶּשֶׁא, יַרְבִּיצֵנִי; עַל-מֵי מְנֻחוֹת יְנַהֲלֵנִי. 2 He maketh me to lie down in green pastures; He leadeth me beside the still waters.
ג נַפְשִׁי יְשׁוֹבֵב; יַנְחֵנִי בְמַעְגְּלֵי-צֶדֶק, לְמַעַן שְׁמוֹ. 3 He restoreth my soul; He guideth me in straight paths for His name’s sake.
ד גַּם כִּי-אֵלֵךְ בְּגֵיא צַלְמָוֶת, לֹא-אִירָא רָע– כִּי-אַתָּה עִמָּדִי;
שִׁבְטְךָ וּמִשְׁעַנְתֶּךָ, הֵמָּה יְנַחֲמֻנִי.
4 Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for Thou art with me; {N}
Thy rod and Thy staff, they comfort me.
ה תַּעֲרֹךְ לְפָנַי, שֻׁלְחָן– נֶגֶד צֹרְרָי;
דִּשַּׁנְתָּ בַשֶּׁמֶן רֹאשִׁי, כּוֹסִי רְוָיָה.
5 Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies; {N}
Thou hast anointed my head with oil; my cup runneth over.
ו אַךְ, טוֹב וָחֶסֶד יִרְדְּפוּנִי– כָּל-יְמֵי חַיָּי;
וְשַׁבְתִּי בְּבֵית-יְהוָה, לְאֹרֶךְ יָמִים.
6 Surely goodness and kindness shall follow me all the days of my life; {N}
and I shall dwell in the house of the LORD for ever. {P}

Tuesday Prayer “Our Father in Heaven give us bread”

And when thou prayest, be not as the face-takers, who love to stand in the assemblies and at the corners of the streets to pray, that they may be seen of men; and truly I say to you that they receive their reward.

But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy secret chamber, and shut thy door, and pray to thy Father who is in secret; and thy Father, who seeth in secret, shall reward thee in openness.

And when thou art praying, be not wordy, like the profane; for they think that in much speaking they are heard.

Be you not like them, for your Father knoweth what is needful for you before that you ask him.

Thus pray:

Our Father who art in the heavens! be sanctified thy Name.

Come thy kingdom.

Be done thy will, as in heaven, also in earth.

Give to us the bread of our need to-day; and forgive us our debts, as also we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from the evil.

For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory to the age of ages.

For if you forgive men their trespasses, your Father who is in heaven will forgive you also.

But if you will not forgive men, your Father also forgiveth not your trespasses unto you.
