Psalms1 A Song of Ascents. {N}
I will lift up mine eyes unto the mountains:
from whence shall my help come?
2 My help cometh from the LORD, who made heaven and earth.
3 He will not suffer thy foot to be moved;
He that keepeth thee will not slumber.
4 Behold, He that keepeth Israel doth neither slumber nor sleep.
5 The LORD is thy keeper;
the LORD is thy shade upon thy right hand.
6 The sun shall not smite thee by day, nor the moon by night.
7 The LORD shall keep thee from all evil;
He shall keep thy soul.
8 The LORD shall guard thy going out and thy coming in, from this time forth and for ever. {P}
Numbers
17,1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
17,2 ‘Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the fire-pans out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are become holy;
17,3 even the fire-pans of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar–
for they are become holy, because they were offered before the LORD–
that they may be a sign unto the children of Israel.’
17,4 And Eleazar the priest took the brazen fire-pans, which they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar,
17,5 to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no common man, that is not of the seed of Aaron, draw near to burn incense before the LORD; that he fare not as Korah, and as his company; as the LORD spoke unto him by the hand of Moses. {P}
17,6 But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying:
‘Ye have killed the people of the LORD.’
17,7 And it came to pass, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tent of meeting; and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared.
17,8 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting. {S}
17,9 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
17,10 ‘Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.’
And they fell upon their faces.
17,11 And Moses said unto Aaron:
‘Take thy fire-pan, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them; for there is wrath gone out from the LORD:
the plague is begun.’
17,12 And Aaron took as Moses spoke, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people; and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.
17,13 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed.
17,14 Now they that died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of Korah.
17,15 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tent of meeting, and the plague was stayed. {P}
17,16 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:
17,17 ‘Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers’ house, of all their princes according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods; thou shalt write every man’s name upon his rod.
Kings
2 3,22 And they rose up early in the morning, and the sun shone upon the water, and the Moabites saw the water some way off as red as blood;
2 3,23 and they said:
‘This is blood:
the kings have surely fought together, and they have smitten each man his fellow; now therefore, Moab, to the spoil.’
2 3,24 And when they came to the camp of Israel, the Israelites rose up and smote the Moabites, so that they fled before them.
And they smote the land, even Moab, mightily.
2 3,25 And they beat down the cities; and on every good piece of land they cast every man his stone, and filled it; and they stopped all the fountains of water, and felled all the good trees; until there was left only Kir-hareseth with the stones of the wall thereof; so the slingers encompassed it, and smote it.
2 3,26 And when the king of Moab saw that the battle was too sore for him, he took with him seven hundred men that drew sword, to break through unto the king of Edom; but they could not.
2 3,27 Then he took his eldest son that should have reigned in his stead, and offered him for a burnt-offering upon the wall.
And there came great wrath upon Israel; and they departed from him, and returned to their own land. {P}
2 4,1 Now there cried a certain woman of the wives of the sons of the prophets unto Elisha, saying: ‘Thy servant my husband is dead; and thou knowest that thy servant did fear the LORD; and the creditor is come to take unto him my two children to be bondmen.’
2 4,2 And Elisha said unto her:
‘What shall I do for thee? tell me; what hast thou in the house?’
And she said:
‘Thy handmaid hath not any thing in the house, save a pot of oil.’
2 4,3 Then he said:
‘Go, borrow thee vessels abroad of all thy neighbours, even empty vessels; borrow not a few.
2 4,4 And thou shalt go in, and shut the door upon thee and upon thy sons, and pour out into all those vessels; and thou shalt set aside that which is full.’
2 4,5 So she went from him, and shut the door upon her and upon her sons; they brought the vessels to her, and she poured out.
2 4,6 And it came to pass, when the vessels were full, that she said unto her son:
‘Bring me yet a vessel.’
And he said unto her:
‘There is not a vessel more.’
And the oil stayed.
2 4,7 Then she came and told the man of God. And he said:
‘Go, sell the oil, and pay thy debt, and live thou and thy sons of the rest.’ {P}
2 4,8 And it fell on a day, that Elisha passed to Shunem, where was a great woman; and she constrained him to eat bread.
And so it was, that as oft as he passed by, he turned in thither to eat bread.
2 4,9 And she said unto her husband:
‘Behold now, I perceive that this is a holy man of God, that passeth by us continually.
2 4,10 Let us make, I pray thee, a little chamber on the roof; and let us set for him there a bed, and a table, and a stool, and a candlestick; and it shall be, when he cometh to us, that he shall turn in thither.’ 2 4,11 And it fell on a day, that he came thither, and he turned into the upper chamber and lay there.
2 4,12 And he said to Gehazi his servant:
‘Call this Shunammite.’
And when he had called her, she stood before him.
2 4,13 And he said unto him:
‘Say now unto her:
Behold, thou hast been careful for us with all this care; what is to be done for thee? wouldest thou be spoken for to the king, or to the captain of the host?’
And she answered:
‘I dwell among mine own people.’
2 4,14 And he said:
‘What then is to be done for her?’
And Gehazi answered:
‘Verily she hath no son, and her husband is old.’
2 4,15 And he said:
‘Call her.’
And when he had called her, she stood in the door.
2 4,16 And he said:
‘At this season, when the time cometh round, thou shalt embrace a son.’
And she said:
‘Nay, my lord, thou man of God, do not lie unto thy handmaid.’
2 4,17 And the woman conceived, and bore a son at that season, when the time came round, as Elisha had said unto her.
2 4,18 And when the child was grown, it fell on a day, that he went out to his father to the reapers.
2 4,19 And he said unto his father:
‘My head, my head.’
And he said to his servant:
‘Carry him to his mother.’
2 4,20 And when he had taken him, and brought him to his mother, he sat on her knees till noon, and then died.
Ruth
3,1 And Naomi her mother-in-law said unto her:
‘My daughter, shall I not seek rest for thee, that it may be well with thee?
3,2 And now is there not Boaz our kinsman, with whose maidens thou wast?
Behold, he winnoweth barley to-night in the threshing-floor.
3,3 Wash thyself therefore, and anoint thee, and put thy raiment upon thee, and get thee down to the threshing-floor; but make not thyself known unto the man, until he shall have done eating and drinking. 3,4 And it shall be, when he lieth down, that thou shalt mark the place where he shall lie, and thou shalt go in, and uncover his feet, and lay thee down; and he will tell thee what thou shalt do.’
3,5 And she said unto her:
‘All that thou sayest unto me I will do.’
3,6 And she went down unto the threshing-floor, and did according to all that her mother-in-law bade her.
3,7 And when Boaz had eaten and drunk, and his heart was merry, he went to lie down at the end of the heap of corn; and she came softly, and uncovered his feet, and laid her down.
3,8 And it came to pass at midnight, that the man was startled, and turned himself; and, behold, a woman lay at his feet.
3,9 And he said:
‘Who art thou?’
And she answered:
‘I am Ruth thine handmaid; spread therefore thy skirt over thy handmaid; for thou art a near kinsman.’
3,10 And he said:
‘Blessed be thou of the LORD, my daughter; thou hast shown more kindness in the end than at the beginning, inasmuch as thou didst not follow the young men, whether poor or rich.
3,11 And now, my daughter, fear not; I will do to thee all that thou sayest; for all the men in the gate of my people do know that thou art a virtuous woman.
3,12 And now it is true that I am a near kinsman; howbeit there is a kinsman nearer than I.
3,13 Tarry this night, and it shall be in the morning, that if he will perform unto thee the part of a kinsman, well; let him do the kinsman’s part; but if he be not willing to do the part of a kinsman to thee, then will I do the part of a kinsman to thee, as the LORD liveth; lie down until the morning.’
3,14 And she lay at his feet until the morning; and she rose up before one could discern another. For he said:
‘Let it not be known that the woman came to the threshing-floor.’
3,15 And he said:
‘Bring the mantle that is upon thee, and hold it’;
and she held it; and he measured six measures of barley, and laid it on her; and he went into the city.
The Annunciation of Mark – Chapter 10

23 And Jesus looked upon his disciples, and said to them:
How hard for those who possess wealth, to enter into the kingdom of God !
24 And the disciples wondered at the remark.
And Jesus, replied again, and said to them:
My children, how hard it is, for those who trust in riches, to enter into the kingdom of God.
25 It is easier for a camel to enter the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God.
26 And they wondered the more, and said among themselves:
Who can obtain life !
27 And Jesus looked on them again, and said to them:
With men, this is not possible, but with God [it is]; for with God all things are possible.
28 And Cephas began to say:
Lo, we have left every thing, and have cleaved to thee.
29 Jesus answered and said:
Verily I say to you, There is no man that leaveth houses, or brothers or sisters, or father or mother, or wife or children, for my sake, and for the sake of my tidings,
30 who will not receive a hundredfold, here in the present time, houses, and brothers and sisters, and mothers and children, and lands, with persecution; and in the world to come eternal life.
31 But many are first, who will be last; and last, [who will be] first.
32 And as they were in the way, going up to Jerusalem, Jesus went before them:
and they were amazed, and walked after him with trembling.
And he took his twelve, and began to tell them what was to befall him.
33 Behold, we are going to Jerusalem; and the Son of man will be delivered up to the chief priests and the Scribes; and they will condemn him to die, and will deliver him over to the Gentiles.
The Book of Acts – Chapter 23
3 And Paul said to him:
God is here-after to smite thee, [thou] Whited Wall !
For, sittest thou judging me agreeably to law, while thou transgressest the law, and commandest to smite me?
4 And those standing by, said to him:
Dost thou reproach the priest of God !
5 Paul said to them:
I was not aware, my brethren, that he was the priest:
for it is written, Thou shalt not curse the ruler of thy people.
6 And, as Paul knew that a part of the people were of the Sadducees, and a part of the Pharisees, he cried out, in the assembly:
Men, my brethren; I am a Pharisee the son of a Pharisee; and for the hope of the resurrection of the dead, I am judged.
7 And when he had said this, the Pharisees and Sadducees fell upon one another, and the people were divided
8 For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, nor angels, nor a spirit:
but the Pharisees confess all these.
