Chapter 131

יְהוָה, לֹא-גָבַהּ לִבִּי– וְלֹא-רָמוּ עֵינַי;

A Song of Ascents;

of David. {N}

LORD, my heart is not haughty, nor mine eyes lofty; {N}

neither do I exercise myself in things too great, or in things too wonderful for me.

Surely I have stilled and quieted my soul; {N}

like a weaned child with his mother;

my soul is with me like a weaned child.

O Israel, hope in the LORD from this time forth and for ever. {P}

Chapter 132

A Song of Ascents. {N}

LORD, remember unto David all his affliction;

How he swore unto the LORD, and vowed unto the Mighty One of Jacob:

‘Surely I will not come into the tent of my house, nor go up into the bed that is spread for me;

I will not give sleep to mine eyes, nor slumber to mine eyelids;

Until I find out a place for the LORD, a dwelling-place for the Mighty One of Jacob.’

Lo, we heard of it as being in Ephrath;

we found it in the field of the wood.

Let us go into His dwelling-place;

let us worship at His footstool.

Arise, O LORD, unto Thy resting-place;

Thou, and the ark of Thy strength.

Let Thy priests be clothed with righteousness;

and let Thy saints shout for joy.

For Thy servant David’s sake turn not away the face of Thine anointed.

The LORD swore unto David in truth;

He will not turn back from it: {N}

‘Of the fruit of thy body will I set upon thy throne.

If thy children keep My covenant and My testimony that I shall teach them, {N}

their children also for ever shall sit upon thy throne.’

For the LORD hath chosen Zion;

He hath desired it for His habitation:

‘This is My resting-place for ever;

here will I dwell;

for I have desired it.

I will abundantly bless her provision;

I will give her needy bread in plenty.

Her priests also will I clothe with yeshua;

and her saints shall shout aloud for joy.

There will I make a horn to shoot up unto David, there have I ordered a lamp for Mine anointed.

His enemies will I clothe with shame;

but upon himself shall his crown shine.’ {P}

Chapter 133

A Song of Ascents;

of David. {N}

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity!

It is like the precious oil upon the head, {N}

coming down upon the beard;

even Aaron’s beard, {N}

that cometh down upon the collar of his garments;

Like the dew of Hermon, that cometh down upon the mountains of Zion; {N}

for there the LORD commanded the blessing, {N}

even life for ever. {P}

A Song of Ascents. {N}

Behold, bless ye the LORD, all ye servants of the LORD, {N}

that stand in the house of the LORD in the night seasons.

Lift up your hands to the sanctuary, and bless ye the LORD.

The LORD bless thee out of Zion;

even He that made heaven and earth. {P}

Ye that stand in the house of the LORD, in the courts of the house of our God.

Praise ye the LORD, for the LORD is good;

sing praises unto His name, for it is pleasant.

For the LORD hath chosen Jacob unto Himself, and Israel for His own treasure.

For I know that the LORD is great, and that our Lord is above all gods.

Whatsoever the LORD pleased, that hath He done, {N}

in heaven and in earth, in the seas and in all deeps;

Who causeth the vapours to ascend from the ends of the earth; {N}

He maketh lightnings for the rain;

He bringeth forth the wind out of His treasuries.

Who smote the first-born of Egypt, both of man and beast.

He sent signs and wonders into the midst of thee, O Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his servants.

Who smote many nations, and slew mighty kings:

And gave their land for a heritage, a heritage unto Israel His people.

O LORD, Thy name endureth for ever;

thy memorial, O LORD, throughout all generations.

For the LORD will judge His people, and repent Himself for His servants.

The idols of the nations are silver and gold, the work of men’s hands.

They have mouths, but they speak not;

eyes have they, but they see not;

They have ears, but they hear not;

neither is there any breath in their mouths.

‘Sing us one of the songs of Zion.’

I will bow down toward Thy holy temple, and give thanks unto Thy name {N}

for Thy mercy and for Thy truth; {N}

for Thou hast magnified Thy word above all Thy name.

In the day that I called, Thou didst answer me;

Thou didst encourage me in my soul with strength.

All the kings of the earth shall give Thee thanks, O LORD, for they have heard the words of Thy mouth.

Thy mercy, O LORD, endureth for ever; forsake not the work of Thine own hands. {P}

Chapter 139

For the Leader.

A Psalm of David. {N}

O LORD, Thou hast searched me, and known me.

Thou knowest my downsitting and mine uprising, Thou understandest my thought afar off.

Thou measurest my going about and my lying down, and art acquainted with all my ways.

For there is not a word in my tongue, but, lo, O LORD, Thou knowest it altogether.

Thou hast hemmed me in behind and before, and laid Thy hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

too high, I cannot attain unto it.

Whither shall I go from Thy spirit?

or whither shall I flee from Thy presence?

If I ascend up into heaven, Thou art there;

if I make my bed in the nether-world, behold, Thou art there.

If I take the wings of the morning, and dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea;

Even there would Thy hand lead me, and Thy right hand would hold me.

And if I say:

‘Surely the darkness shall envelop me, and the light about me shall be night’;

Even the darkness is not too dark for Thee, {N}

but the night shineth as the day;

the darkness is even as the light.

For Thou hast made my reins;

Thou hast knit me together in my mother’s womb.

I will give thanks unto Thee, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made; {N}

wonderful are Thy works;

and that my soul knoweth right well.

My frame was not hidden from Thee, {N}

when I was made in secret, and curiously wrought in the lowest parts of the earth.

Thine eyes did see mine unformed substance, and in Thy book they were all written– {N}

even the days that were fashioned, when as yet there was none of them.

How weighty also are Thy thoughts unto me, O God!

How great is the sum of them!

If I would count them, they are more in number than the sand;

were I to come to the end of them, I would still be with Thee.

If Thou but wouldest slay the wicked, O God–depart from me therefore, ye men of blood;

Who utter Thy name with wicked thought, they take it for falsehood, even Thine enemies–

Do not I hate them, O LORD, that hate Thee?

And do not I strive with those that rise up against Thee?

I hate them with utmost hatred;

I count them mine enemies.

Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me, and know my thoughts;

And see if there be any way in me that is grievous, and lead me in the way everlasting. {P}

Chapter 140

For the Leader. A Psalm of David.

Deliver me, O LORD, from the evil man;

preserve me from the violent man;

Who devise evil things in their heart;

every day do they stir up wars.

They have sharpened their tongue like a serpent;

vipers’ venom is under their lips.

Selah

Keep me, O LORD, from the hands of the wicked;

preserve me from the violent man; {N}

who have purposed to make my steps slip.

ו טָמְנוּ גֵאִים, פַּח לִי– וַחֲבָלִים, פָּרְשׂוּ רֶשֶׁת לְיַד-מַעְגָּל;

The proud have hid a snare for me, and cords;

they have spread a net by the wayside; {N}

they have set gins for me.

Selah

I have said unto the LORD:

‘Thou art my God’;

give ear, O LORD, unto the voice of my supplications.

Jehovah my Lord, the strength of my yeshua, who hast screened my head in the day of battle,

Grant not, O LORD, the desires of the wicked;

further not his evil device, so that they exalt themselves.

Selah

As for the head of those that compass me about, let the mischief of their own lips cover them.

Let burning coals fall upon them;

let them be cast into the fire, into deep pits, that they rise not up again.

A slanderer shall not be established in the earth;

the violent and evil man shall be hunted with thrust upon thrust.

I know that the LORD will maintain the cause of the poor, and the right of the needy.

Surely the righteous shall give thanks unto Thy name;

the upright shall dwell in Thy presence. {P}

Chapter 141

A Psalm of David. {N}

LORD, I have called Thee;

make haste unto me;

give ear unto my voice, when I call unto Thee.

Let my prayer be set forth as incense before Thee, the lifting up of my hands as the evening sacrifice.

Set a guard, O LORD, to my mouth;

keep watch at the door of my lips.

אֶת-אִישִׁים פֹּעֲלֵי-אָוֶן;

Incline not my heart to any evil thing, {N}

to be occupied in deeds of wickedness {N}

with men that work iniquity; {N}

and let me not eat of their dainties.

Let the righteous smite me in kindness, and correct me; {N}

oil so choice let not my head refuse; {N}

for still is my prayer because of their wickedness.

Their judges are thrown down by the sides of the rock;

and they shall hear my words, that they are sweet.

As when one cleaveth and breaketh up the earth, our bones are scattered at the grave’s mouth.

For mine eyes are unto Thee, O GOD the Lord;

in Thee have I taken refuge, O pour not out my soul.

Keep me from the snare which they have laid for me, and from the gins of the workers of iniquity.

Let the wicked fall into their own nets, whilst I withal escape. {P}

Chapter 142

א מַשְׂכִּיל לְדָוִד;

Maschil of David, {N}

when he was in the cave;

a Prayer.

With my voice I cry unto the LORD;

with my voice I make supplication unto the LORD.

I pour out my complaint before Him, I declare before Him my trouble;

When my spirit fainteth within me–

Thou knowest my path– {N}

in the way wherein I walk have they hidden a snare for me.

Look on my right hand, and see, for there is no man that knoweth me; {N}

I have no way to flee;

no man careth for my soul.

I have cried unto Thee, O LORD; {N}

I have said:

‘Thou art my refuge, my portion in the land of the living.’

Attend unto my cry;

for I am brought very low; {N}

deliver me from my persecutors;

for they are too strong for me.

Bring my soul out of prison, that I may give thanks unto Thy name; {N}

the righteous shall crown themselves because of me;

for Thou wilt deal bountifully with me. {P}

Chapter 143

יְהוָה, שְׁמַע תְּפִלָּתִי– הַאֲזִינָה אֶל-תַּחֲנוּנַי;

A Psalm of David. {N}

O LORD, hear my prayer, give ear to my supplications; {N}

in Thy faithfulness answer me, and in Thy righteousness.

And enter not into judgment with Thy servant; {N}

for in Thy sight shall no man living be justified.

ג כִּי רָדַף אוֹיֵב, נַפְשִׁי– דִּכָּא לָאָרֶץ, חַיָּתִי;

For the enemy hath persecuted my soul;

he hath crushed my life down to the ground; {N}

he hath made me to dwell in darkness, as those that have been long dead.

And my spirit fainteth within me;

my heart within me is appalled.

ה זָכַרְתִּי יָמִים, מִקֶּדֶם– הָגִיתִי בְכָל-פָּעֳלֶךָ;

I remember the days of old;

I meditate on all Thy doing; {N}

I muse on the work of Thy hands.

I spread forth my hands unto Thee;

my soul [thirsteth] after Thee, as a weary land.

Selah

Answer me speedily, O LORD, my spirit faileth; {N}

hide not Thy face from me;

lest I become like them that go down into the pit.

Cause me to hear Thy lovingkindness in the morning, for in Thee do I trust; {N}

cause me to know the way wherein I should walk, for unto Thee have I lifted up my soul.

Deliver me from mine enemies, O LORD;

with Thee have I hidden myself.

Teach me to do Thy will, for Thou art my God; {N}

let Thy good spirit lead me in an even land.

For Thy name’s sake, O LORD, quicken me;

in Thy righteousness bring my soul out of trouble.

And in Thy mercy cut off mine enemies, and destroy all them that harass my soul;

for I am Thy servant. {P}
