2 Chapter 19

And it came to pass, when king Hezekiah heard it, that he rent his clothes, and covered himself with sackcloth, and went into the house of the LORD.

And he sent Eliakim, who was over the household, and Shebna the scribe, and the elders of the priests, covered with sackcloth, unto Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz.

And they said unto him:

‘Thus saith Hezekiah:

This day is a day of trouble, and of rebuke, and of contumely;

for the children are come to the birth, and there is not strength to bring forth.

It may be the LORD thy God will hear all the words of Rab-shakeh, whom the king of Assyria his master hath sent to taunt the living God, and will rebuke the words which the LORD thy God hath heard;

wherefore make prayer for the remnant that is left.’

So the servants of king Hezekiah came to Isaiah.

And Isaiah said unto them:

‘Thus shall ye say to your master:

Thus saith the LORD:

Be not afraid of the words that thou hast heard, wherewith the servants of the king of Assyria have blasphemed Me.

Behold, I will put a spirit in him, and he shall hear a rumour, and shall return to his own land;

and I will cause him to fall by the sword in his own land.’

So Rab-shakeh returned, and found the king of Assyria warring against Libnah;

for he had heard that he was departed from Lachish.

And when he heard say of Tirhakah king of Ethiopia:

‘Behold, he is come out to fight against thee’;

he sent messengers again unto Hezekiah, saying:

‘Thus shall ye speak to Hezekiah king of Judah, saying:

Let not thy God in whom thou trustest beguile thee, saying:

Jerusalem shall not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.

Behold, thou hast heard what the kings of Assyria have done to all lands, by destroying them utterly;

and shalt thou be delivered?

Have the gods of the nations delivered them, which my fathers have destroyed, Gozan, and Haran, and Rezeph, and the sons of Eden that were in Telassar?

Where is the king of Hamath, and the king of Arpad, and the king of the city of Sepharvaim, of Hena, and Ivvah?’

And Hezekiah received the letter from the hand of the messengers, and read it;

and Hezekiah went up unto the house of the LORD, and spread it before the LORD. {P}

And Hezekiah prayed before the LORD, and said:

‘O LORD, the God of Israel, that sittest upon the cherubim, Thou art the God, even Thou alone, of all the kingdoms of the earth;

Thou hast made heaven and earth.

Incline Thine ear, O LORD, and hear; open Thine eyes, O LORD, and see;

and hear the words of Sennacherib, wherewith he hath sent him to taunt the living God.

Of a truth, LORD, the kings of Assyria have laid waste the nations and their lands,

and have cast their gods into the fire;

for they were no gods, but the work of men’s hands, wood and stone;

therefore they have destroyed them.

Now therefore, O LORD our God, save Thou us, I beseech Thee, out of his hand, that all the kingdoms of the earth may know that Thou art the LORD God, even Thou only.’ {S}

Then Isaiah the son of Amoz sent to Hezekiah, saying:

‘Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel:

Whereas thou hast prayed to Me against Sennacherib king of Assyria, I have heard thee.

This is the word that the LORD hath spoken concerning him:

The virgin daughter of Zion hath despised thee and laughed thee to scorn;

the daughter of Jerusalem hath shaken her head at thee.

Whom hast thou taunted and blasphemed?

and against whom hast thou exalted thy voice?

Yea, thou hast lifted up thine eyes on high, even against the Holy One of Israel!

By the messengers thou hast taunted the Lord, and hast said:

With the multitude of my chariots am I come up to the height of the mountains, to the innermost parts of Lebanon;

and I have cut down the tall cedars thereof, and the choice cypresses thereof;

and I have entered into his farthest lodge, the forest of his fruitful field.

I have digged and drunk strange waters, and with the sole of my feet have I dried up all the rivers of Egypt.

Hast thou not heard?

long ago I made it, in ancient times I fashioned it;

now have I brought it to pass, yea, it is done;

that fortified cities should be laid waste into ruinous heaps.

Therefore their inhabitants were of small power, they were dismayed and confounded;

they were as the grass of the field, and as the green herb, as the grass on the housetops, and as corn blasted before it is grown up.

But I know thy sitting down, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy raging against Me.

Because of thy raging against Me, and for that thy tumult is come up into Mine ears, therefore will I put My hook in thy nose, and My bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way by which thou camest.

And this shall be the sign unto thee:

ye shall eat this year that which groweth of itself, and in the second year that which springeth of the same; and in the third year sow ye, and reap, and plant vineyards, and eat the fruit thereof.

And the remnant that is escaped of the house of Judah shall again take root downward, and bear fruit upward.

For out of Jerusalem shall go forth a remnant, and out of mount Zion they that shall escape;

the zeal of the LORD of hosts shall perform this. {S}

Therefore thus saith the LORD concerning the king of Assyria:

He shall not come unto this city, nor shoot an arrow there, neither shall he come before it with shield, nor cast a mound against it.

By the way that he came, by the same shall he return, and he shall not come unto this city, saith the LORD.

For I will defend this city to save it, for Mine own sake, and for My servant David’s sake.’

And it came to pass that night, that the angel of the LORD went forth, and smote in the camp of the Assyrians a hundred fourscore and five thousand;

and when men arose early in the morning, behold, they were all dead corpses.

So Sennacherib king of Assyria departed, and went and returned, and dwelt at Nineveh.

And it came to pass, as he was worshipping in the house of Nisroch his god, that Adrammelech and Sarezer his sons smote him with the sword;

and they escaped into the land of Ararat.

And Esarhaddon his son reigned in his stead. {P}

2 Chapter 20

In those days was Hezekiah sick unto death.

And Isaiah the prophet the son of Amoz came to him, and said unto him:

‘Thus saith the LORD:

Set thy house in order; for thou shalt die, and not live.’

Then he turned his face to the wall, and prayed unto the LORD, saying:

‘Remember now, O LORD, I beseech Thee, how I have walked before Thee in truth and with a whole heart, and have done that which is good in Thy sight.’

And Hezekiah wept sore. {S}

And it came to pass, before Isaiah was gone out of the inner court of the city, that the word of the LORD came to him, saying:

‘Return, and say to Hezekiah the prince of My people:

Thus saith the LORD, the God of David thy father:

I have heard thy prayer, I have seen thy tears;

behold, I will heal thee;

on the third day thou shalt go up unto the house of the LORD.

And I will add unto thy days fifteen years;

and I will deliver thee and this city out of the hand of the king of Assyria; and I will defend this city for Mine own sake, and for My servant David’s sake.’

And Isaiah said:

‘Take a cake of figs.’

And they took and laid it on the boil, and he recovered.

And Hezekiah said unto Isaiah:

‘What shall be the sign that the LORD will heal me, and that I shall go up unto the house of the LORD the third day?’

And Isaiah said:

‘This shall be the sign unto thee from the LORD, that the LORD will do the thing that He hath spoken:

shall the shadow go forward ten degrees, or go back ten degrees?

And Hezekiah answered:

‘It is a light thing for the shadow to decline ten degrees;

nay, but let the shadow return backward ten degrees.’

And Isaiah the prophet cried unto the LORD;

and he brought the shadow ten degrees backward, by which it had gone down on the dial of Ahaz. {P}

At that time Berodach-baladan the son of Baladan, king of Babylon, sent a letter and a present unto Hezekiah;

for he had heard that Hezekiah had been sick.

And Hezekiah hearkened unto them, and showed them all his treasure-house, the silver, and the gold, and the spices, and the precious oil, and the house of his armour, and all that was found in his treasures;

there was nothing in his house, nor in all his dominion, that Hezekiah showed them not.

Then came Isaiah the prophet unto king Hezekiah, and said unto him:

‘What said these men?

and from whence came they unto thee?’

And Hezekiah said:

‘They are come from a far country, even from Babylon.’

And he said:

‘What have they seen in thy house?’

And Hezekiah answered:

‘All that is in my house have they seen;

there is nothing among my treasures that I have not shown them.’

And Isaiah said unto Hezekiah:

‘Hear the word of the LORD.

Behold, the days come, that all that is in thy house, and that which thy fathers have laid up in store unto this day, shall be carried to Babylon;

nothing shall be left, saith the LORD.

And of thy sons that shall issue from thee, whom thou shalt beget, shall they take away; and they shall be officers in the palace of the king of Babylon.’

Then said Hezekiah unto Isaiah:

‘Good is the word of the LORD which thou hast spoken.’

He said moreover:

‘Is it not so, if peace and truth shall be in my days?’

Now the rest of the acts of Hezekiah, and all his might, and how he made the pool, and the conduit, and brought water into the city, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

And Hezekiah slept with his fathers; and Manasseh his son reigned in his stead. {P}

2 Chapter 21

Manasseh was twelve years old when he began to reign;

and he reigned five and fifty years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Hephzi-bah.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, after the abominations of the masses, whom the LORD cast out before the sons of Israel.

For he built again the high places which Hezekiah his father had destroyed;

and he reared up altars for Baal, and made an Asherah, as did Ahab king of Israel, and worshipped all the host of heaven, and served them.

And he built altars in the house of the LORD, whereof the LORD said:

‘In Jerusalem will I put My name.’

And he built altars for all the host of heaven in the two courts of the house of the LORD.

And he made his son to pass through the fire, and practised soothsaying, and used enchantments, and appointed them that divined by a ghost or a familiar spirit: he wrought much evil in the sight of the LORD, to provoke Him.

And he set the graven image of Asherah, that he had made, in the house of which the LORD said to David and to Solomon his son:

‘In this house, and in Jerusalem, which I have chosen out of all the tribes of Israel, will I put My name for ever;

neither will I cause the feet of Israel to wander any more out of the land which I gave their fathers;

if only they will observe to do according to all that I have commanded them, and according to all the law that My servant Moses commanded them.’

But they hearkened not;

and Manasseh seduced them to do that which is evil more than did the masses, whom the LORD destroyed before the sons of Israel.

And the LORD spoke by His servants the prophets, saying:

‘Because Manasseh king of Judah hath done these abominations, and hath done wickedly above all that the Amorites did, that were before him, and hath made Judah also to sin with his idols; {S}

therefore thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel:

Behold, I bring such evil upon Jerusalem and Judah, that whosoever heareth of it, both his ears shall tingle.

And I will stretch over Jerusalem the line of Samaria, and the plummet of the house of Ahab;

and I will wipe Jerusalem as a man wipeth a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down.

And I will cast off the remnant of Mine inheritance, and deliver them into the hand of their enemies;

and they shall become a prey and a spoil to all their enemies;

because they have done that which is evil in My sight, and have provoked Me, since the day their fathers came forth out of Egypt, even unto this day.’

Moreover Manasseh shed innocent blood very much, till he had filled Jerusalem from one end to another;

beside his sin wherewith he made Judah to sin, in doing that which was evil in the sight of the LORD.

Now the rest of the acts of Manasseh, and all that he did, and his sin that he sinned, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

And Manasseh slept with his fathers, and was buried in the garden of his own house, in the garden of Uzza;

and Amon his son reigned in his stead. {P}

Amon was twenty and two years old when he began to reign; and he reigned two years in Jerusalem;

and his mother’s name was Meshullemeth the daughter of Haruz of Jotbah.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, as did Manasseh his father.

And he walked in all the way that his father walked in, and served the idols that his father served, and worshipped them.

And he forsook the LORD, the God of his fathers, and walked not in the way of the LORD.

And the servants of Amon conspired against him, and put the king to death in his own house.

But the people of the land slew all them that had conspired against king Amon;

and the people of the land made Josiah his son king in his stead.

Now the rest of the acts of Amon which he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

And he was buried in his sepulchre in the garden of Uzza;

and Josiah his son reigned in his stead. {P}

2 Chapter 22

Josiah was eight years old when he began to reign;

and he reigned thirty and one years in Jerusalem;

and his mother’s name was Jedidah the daughter of Adaiah of Bozkath.

And he did that which was right in the eyes of the LORD, and walked in all the way of David his father, and turned not aside to the right hand or to the left. {P}

And it came to pass in the eighteenth year of king Josiah, that the king sent Shaphan the son of Azaliah, the son of Meshullam, the scribe, to the house of the LORD, saying.

‘Go up to Hilkiah the high priest, that he may sum the money which is brought into the house of the LORD, which the keepers of the door have gathered of the people;

and let them deliver it into the hand of the workmen that have the oversight of the house of the LORD;

and let them give it to the workmen that are in the house of the LORD, to repair the breaches of the house;

unto the carpenters, and to the builders, and to the masons;

and for buying timber and hewn stone to repair the house.’–

Howbeit there was no reckoning made with them of the money that was delivered into their hand; for they dealt faithfully.

And Hilkiah the high priest said unto Shaphan the scribe:

‘I have found the book of the Law in the house of the LORD.’

And Hilkiah delivered the book to Shaphan, and he read it.

And Shaphan the scribe came to the king, and brought back word unto the king, and said:

‘Thy servants have poured out the money that was found in the house, and have delivered it into the hand of the workmen that have the oversight of the house of the LORD.’

And Shaphan the scribe told the king, saying:

‘Hilkiah the priest hath delivered me a book.’

And Shaphan read it before the king.

And it came to pass, when the king had heard the words of the book of the Law, that he rent his clothes.

And the king commanded Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam the son of Shaphan, and Achbor the son of Micaiah, and Shaphan the scribe, and Asaiah the king’s servant, saying:

‘Go ye, inquire of the LORD for me, and for the people, and for all Judah, concerning the words of this book that is found;

for great is the wrath of the LORD that is kindled against us, because our fathers have not hearkened unto the words of this book, to do according unto all that which is written concerning us.’

So Hilkiah the priest, and Ahikam, and Achbor, and Shaphan, and Asaiah, went unto Huldah the prophetess, the wife of Shallum the son of Tikvah, the son of Harhas, keeper of the wardrobe–

now she dwelt in Jerusalem in the second quarter

–and they spoke with her.

And she said unto them:

‘Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel:

Tell ye the man that sent you unto me:

Thus saith the LORD:

Behold, I will bring evil upon this place, and upon the inhabitants thereof, even all the words of the book which the king of Judah hath read;

because they have forsaken Me, and have offered unto other gods, that they might provoke Me with all the work of their hands;

therefore My wrath shall be kindled against this place, and it shall not be quenched.

But unto the king of Judah, who sent you to inquire of the LORD, thus shall ye say to him:

Thus saith the LORD, the God of Israel:

As touching the words which thou hast heard,

because thy heart was tender, and thou didst humble thyself before the LORD, when thou heardest what I spoke against this place, and against the inhabitants thereof, that they should become an astonishment and a curse, and hast rent thy clothes, and wept before Me, I also have heard thee, saith the LORD.

Therefore, behold, I will gather thee to thy fathers, and thou shalt be gathered to thy grave in peace, neither shall thine eyes see all the evil which I will bring upon this place.’

And they brought back word unto the king.

2 Chapter 23

And the king sent, and they gathered unto him all the elders of Judah and of Jerusalem.

And the king went up to the house of the LORD, and all the men of Judah and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem with him, and the priests, and the prophets, and all the people, both small and great;

and he read in their ears all the words of the book of the covenant which was found in the house of the LORD.

And the king stood on the platform, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep His commandments, and His testimonies, and His statutes, with all his heart, and all his soul, to confirm the words of this covenant that were written in this book;

and all the people stood to the covenant.

And the king commanded Hilkiah the high priest, and the priests of the second order, and the keepers of the door, to bring forth out of the temple of the LORD all the vessels that were made for Baal, and for the Asherah, and for all the host of heaven;

and he burned them without Jerusalem in the fields of Kidron, and carried the ashes of them unto Beth-el.

And he put down the idolatrous priests, whom the kings of Judah had ordained to offer in the high places in the cities of Judah, and in the places round about Jerusalem; them also that offered unto Baal, to the sun, and to the moon, and to the constellations, and to all the host of heaven.

And he brought out the Asherah from the house of the LORD, without Jerusalem, unto the brook Kidron, and burned it at the brook Kidron, and stamped it small to powder, and cast the powder thereof upon the graves of the common people.

And he broke down the houses of the sodomites, that were in the house of the LORD, where the women wove coverings for the Asherah.

And he brought all the priests out of the cities of Judah, and defiled the high places where the priests had made offerings, from Geba to Beer-sheba;

and he broke down the high places of the gates that were at the entrance of the gate of Joshua the governor of the city, which were on a man’s left hand as he entered the gate of the city.

Nevertheless the priests of the high places came not up to the altar of the LORD in Jerusalem, but they did eat unleavened bread among their brethren.

And he defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter to pass through the fire to Molech.

And he took away the horses that the kings of Judah had given to the sun, at the entrance of the house of the LORD, by the chamber of Nethan-melech the officer, which was in the precincts;

and he burned the chariots of the sun with fire.

And the altars that were on the roof of the upper chamber of Ahaz, which the kings of Judah had made, and the altars which Manasseh had made in the two courts of the house of the LORD, did the king break down, and beat them down from thence, and cast the dust of them into the brook Kidron.

And the high places that were before Jerusalem, which were on the right hand of the mount of corruption, which Solomon the king of Israel had builded for Ashtoreth the detestation of the Zidonians, and for Chemosh the detestation of Moab, and for Milcom the abomination of the sons of Ammon, did the king defile.

And he broke in pieces the pillars, and cut down the Asherim, and filled their places with the bones of men.

Moreover the altar that was at Beth-el, and the high place which Jeroboam the son of Nebat, who made Israel to sin, had made, even that altar and the high place he broke down;

and he burned the high place and stamped it small to powder, and burned the Asherah.

And as Josiah turned himself, he spied the sepulchres that were there in the mount;

and he sent, and took the bones out of the sepulchres, and burned them upon the altar, and defiled it, according to the word of the LORD which the man of God proclaimed, who proclaimed these things.

Then he said:

‘What monument is that which I see?’

And the men of the city told him:

‘It is the sepulchre of the man of God, who came from Judah, and proclaimed these things that thou hast done against the altar of Beth-el.’

And he said:

‘Let him be; let no man move his bones.’

So they let his bones alone, with the bones of the prophet that came out of Samaria.

And all the houses also of the high places that were in the cities of Samaria, which the kings of Israel had made to provoke [the LORD], Josiah took away, and did to them according to all the acts that he had done in Beth-el.

And he slew all the priests of the high places that were there, upon the altars, and burned men’s bones upon them;

and he returned to Jerusalem.

And the king commanded all the people, saying:

‘Keep the passover unto the LORD your God, as it is written in this book of the covenant.’

For there was not kept such a passover from the days of the judges that judged Israel, nor in all the days of the kings of Israel, nor of the kings of Judah;

but in the eighteenth year of king Josiah was this passover kept to the LORD in Jerusalem.

Moreover them that divined by a ghost or a familiar spirit, and the teraphim, and the idols, and all the detestable things that were spied in the land of Judah and in Jerusalem, did Josiah put away, that he might confirm the words of the law which were written in the book that Hilkiah the priest found in the house of the LORD.

And like unto him was there no king before him, that turned to the LORD with all his heart, and with all his soul, and with all his might, according to all the law of Moses;

neither after him arose there any like him.

Notwithstanding the LORD turned not from the fierceness of His great wrath, wherewith His anger was kindled against Judah, because of all the provocations wherewith Manasseh had provoked Him.

And the LORD said:

‘I will remove Judah also out of My sight, as I have removed Israel, and I will cast off this city which I have chosen, even Jerusalem, and the house of which I said:

My name shall be there.’

Now the rest of the acts of Josiah, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

In his days Pharaoh-necoh king of Egypt went up against the king of Assyria to the river Euphrates;

and king Josiah went against him;

and he slew him at Megiddo, when he had seen him.

And his servants carried him in a chariot dead from Megiddo, and brought him to Jerusalem, and buried him in his own sepulchre.

And the people of the land took Jehoahaz the son of Josiah, and anointed him, and made him king in his father’s stead. {P}

Jehoahaz was twenty and three years old when he began to reign;

and he reigned three months in Jerusalem;

and his mother’s name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done.

And Pharaoh-necoh put him in bands at Riblah in the land of Hamath, that he might not reign in Jerusalem;

and put the land to a fine of a hundred talents of silver, and a talent of gold.

And Pharaoh-necoh made Eliakim the son of Josiah king in the room of Josiah his father, and changed his name to Jehoiakim; but he took Jehoahaz away;

and he came to Egypt, and died there.

לה וְהַכֶּסֶף וְהַזָּהָב, נָתַן יְהוֹיָקִים לְפַרְעֹה–אַךְ הֶעֱרִיךְ אֶת-הָאָרֶץ, לָתֵת אֶת-הַכֶּסֶף עַל-פִּי פַרְעֹה: אִישׁ כְּעֶרְכּוֹ, נָגַשׂ אֶת-הַכֶּסֶף וְאֶת-הַזָּהָב אֶת-עַם הָאָרֶץ, לָתֵת, לְפַרְעֹה נְכֹה. {ס} 35 And Jehoiakim gave the silver and the gold to Pharaoh;

but he taxed the land to give the money according to the commandment of Pharaoh;

he exacted the silver and the gold of the people of the land, of every one according to his taxation, to give it unto Pharaoh-necoh. {S}

Jehoiakim was twenty and five years old when he began to reign;

and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem; and his mother’s name was Zebudah the daughter of Pedaiah of Rumah.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his fathers had done.

2 Chapter 24

In his days Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up, and Jehoiakim became his servant three years;

then he turned and rebelled against him.

And the LORD sent against him bands of the Chaldeans, and bands of the Arameans, and bands of the Moabites, and bands of the children of Ammon, and sent them against Judah to destroy it, according to the word of the LORD, which He spoke by the hand of His servants the prophets.

Surely at the commandment of the LORD came this upon Judah, to remove them out of His sight, for the sins of Manasseh, according to all that he did;

and also for the innocent blood that he shed; for he filled Jerusalem with innocent blood;

and the LORD would not pardon.

Now the rest of the acts of Jehoiakim, and all that he did, are they not written in the book of the chronicles of the kings of Judah?

So Jehoiakim slept with his fathers;

and Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead.

And the king of Egypt came not again any more out of his land;

for the king of Babylon had taken, from the Brook of Egypt unto the river Euphrates, all that pertained to the king of Egypt. {P}

Jehoiachin was eighteen years old when he began to reign;

and he reigned in Jerusalem three months;

and his mother’s name was Nehushta the daughter of Elnathan of Jerusalem.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that his father had done.

At that time the servants of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up to Jerusalem, and the city was besieged.

And Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came unto the city, while his servants were besieging it.

And Jehoiachin the king of Judah went out to the king of Babylon, he, and his mother, and his servants, and his princes, and his officers;

and the king of Babylon took him in the eighth year of his reign.

And he carried out thence all the treasures of the house of the LORD, and the treasures of the king’s house, and cut in pieces all the vessels of gold which Solomon king of Israel had made in the temple of the LORD, as the LORD had said.

And he carried away all Jerusalem, and all the princes, and all the mighty men of valour, even ten thousand captives, and all the craftsmen and the smiths;

none remained, save the poorest sort of the people of the land.

And he carried away Jehoiachin to Babylon; and the king’s mother, and the king’s wives, and his officers, and the chief men of the land, carried he into captivity from Jerusalem to Babylon.

And all the men of might, even seven thousand, and the craftsmen and the smiths a thousand, all of them strong and apt for war, even them the king of Babylon brought captive to Babylon.

And the king of Babylon made Mattaniah his father’s brother king in his stead, and changed his name to Zedekiah. {P}

Zedekiah was twenty and one years old when he began to reign;

and he reigned eleven years in Jerusalem;

and his mother’s name was Hamutal the daughter of Jeremiah of Libnah.

And he did that which was evil in the sight of the LORD, according to all that Jehoiakim had done.

For through the anger of the LORD did it come to pass in Jerusalem and Judah, until He had cast them out from His presence.

And Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon. {S}

2 Chapter 25

And it came to pass in the ninth year of his reign, in the tenth month, in the tenth day of the month, that Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came, he and all his army, against Jerusalem, and encamped against it;

and they built forts against it round about.

So the city was besieged unto the eleventh year of king Zedekiah.

On the ninth day of the [fourth] month the famine was sore in the city, so that there was no bread for the people of the land.

Then a breach was made in the city, and all the men of war [fled] by night by the way of the gate between the two walls, which was by the king’s garden–

now the Chaldeans were against the city round about

–and the king went by the way of the Arabah.

But the army of the Chaldeans pursued after the king, and overtook him in the plains of Jericho;

and all his army was scattered from him.

Then they took the king, and carried him up unto the king of Babylon to Riblah;

and they gave judgment upon him.

And they slew the sons of Zedekiah before his eyes, and put out the eyes of Zedekiah, and bound him in fetters, and carried him to Babylon. {S}

Now in the fifth month, on the seventh day of the month, which was the nineteenth year of king Nebuchadnezzar, king of Babylon, came Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard, a servant of the king of Babylon, unto Jerusalem.

And he burnt the house of the LORD, and the king’s house; and all the houses of Jerusalem, even every great man’s house, burnt he with fire.

And all the army of the Chaldeans, that were with the captain of the guard, broke down the walls of Jerusalem round about.

And the residue of the people that were left in the city, and those that fell away, that fell to the king of Babylon, and the residue of the multitude, did Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard carry away captive.

But the captain of the guard left of the poorest of the land to be vinedressers and husbandmen.

And the pillars of brass that were in the house of the LORD, and the bases and the brazen sea that were in the house of the LORD, did the Chaldeans break in pieces, and carried the brass of them to Babylon.

And the pots, and the shovels, and the snuffers, and the pans, and all the vessels of brass wherewith they ministered, took they away.

And the fire-pans, and the basins, that which was of gold, in gold, and that which was of silver, in silver, the captain of the guard took away.

The two pillars, the one sea, and the bases, which Solomon had made for the house of the LORD; the brass of all these vessels was without weight.

The height of the one pillar was eighteen cubits, and a capital of brass was upon it;

and the height of the capital was three cubits;

with network and pomegranates upon the capital round about, all of brass;

and like unto these had the second pillar with network.

And the captain of the guard took Seraiah the chief priest, and Zephaniah the second priest, and the three keepers of the door;

and out of the city he took an officer that was set over the men of war;

and five men of them that saw the king’s face, who were found in the city;

and the scribe of the captain of the host, who mustered the people of the land;

and threescore men of the people of the land, that were found in the city.

And Nebuzaradan the captain of the guard took them, and brought them to the king of Babylon to Riblah.

And the king of Babylon smote them, and put them to death at Riblah in the land of Hamath.

So Judah was carried away captive out of his land.

And as for the people that were left in the land of Judah, whom Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon had left, even over them he made Gedaliah the son of Ahikam, the son of Shaphan, governor.

Now when all the captains of the forces, they and their men, heard that the king of Babylon had made Gedaliah governor, they came to Gedaliah to Mizpah, even Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, and Johanan the son of Kareah, and Seraiah the son of Tanhumeth the Netophathite and Jaazaniah the son of the Maacathite, they and their men.

And Gedaliah swore to them and to their men, and said unto them:

‘Fear not because of the servants of the Chaldeans;

dwell in the land, and serve the king of Babylon, and it shall be well with you.’ {P}

25 But it came to pass in the seventh month, that Ishmael the son of Nethaniah, the son of Elishama, of the seed royal, came, and ten men with him, and smote Gedaliah, that he died, and the Jews and the Chaldeans that were with him at Mizpah.

And all the people, both small and great, and the captains of the forces, arose, and came to Egypt;

for they were afraid of the Chaldeans. {S}

And it came to pass in the seven and thirtieth year of the captivity of Jehoiachin king of Judah, in the twelfth month, on the seven and twentieth day of the month, that Evil-merodach king of Babylon, in the year that he began to reign, did lift up the head of Jehoiachin king of Judah out of prison.

And he spoke kindly to him, and set his throne above the throne of the kings that were with him in Babylon.

And he changed his prison garments, and did eat bread before him continually all the days of his life.

And for his allowance, there was a continual allowance given him of the king, every day a portion, all the days of his life. {P}

Isaiah

Chapter 1

The vision of Isaiah the son of Amoz, which he saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem, in the days of Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah, kings of Judah.

Hear, O heavens, and give ear, O earth, for the LORD hath spoken:

sons I have reared, and brought up, and they have rebelled against Me.

The ox knoweth his owner, and the ass his master’s crib;

but Israel doth not know, My people doth not consider.

Ah sinful nation, a people laden with iniquity, a seed of evil-doers, sons that deal corruptly;

they have forsaken the LORD, they have contemned the Holy One of Israel, they are turned away backward.

On what part will ye yet be stricken, seeing ye stray away more and more?

The whole head is sick, and the whole heart faint;

From the sole of the foot even unto the head there is no soundness in it;

but wounds, and bruises, and festering sores:

they have not been pressed, neither bound up, neither mollified with oil.

Your country is desolate;

your cities are burned with fire;

your land, strangers devour it in your presence, and it is desolate, as overthrown by floods.

And the daughter of Zion is left as a booth in a vineyard, as a lodge in a garden of cucumbers, as a besieged city.

Except the LORD of hosts had left unto us a very small remnant, we should have been as Sodom, we should have been like unto Gomorrah. {P}

Hear the word of the LORD, ye rulers of Sodom;

give ear unto the law of our God, ye people of Gomorrah.

To what purpose is the multitude of your sacrifices unto Me?

saith the LORD;

I am full of the burnt-offerings of rams, and the fat of fed beasts;

and I delight not in the blood of bullocks, or of lambs, or of he-goats.

When ye come to appear before Me, who hath required this at your hand, to trample My courts?

Bring no more vain oblations;

it is an offering of abomination unto Me;

new moon and sabbath, the holding of convocations–

I cannot endure iniquity along with the solemn assembly.

Your new moons and your appointed seasons My soul hateth;

they are a burden unto Me; I am weary to bear them.

And when ye spread forth your hands, I will hide Mine eyes from you;

yea, when ye make many prayers, I will not hear;

your hands are full of blood.

Wash you, make you clean, put away the evil of your doings from before Mine eyes, cease to do evil;

Learn to do well;

seek justice, relieve the oppressed, judge the fatherless, plead for the widow. {S}

Come now, and let us reason together, saith the LORD;

though your sins be as scarlet, they shall be as white as snow;

though they be red like crimson, they shall be as wool.

If ye be willing and obedient, ye shall eat the good of the land;

But if ye refuse and rebel, ye shall be devoured with the sword;

for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken. {P}

How is the faithful city become a harlot!

She that was full of justice, righteousness lodged in her, but now murderers.

Thy silver is become dross, thy wine mixed with water.

Thy princes are rebellious, and companions of thieves;

every one loveth bribes, and followeth after rewards;

they judge not the fatherless, neither doth the cause of the widow come unto them. {S}

Therefore saith the Lord, the LORD of hosts, the Mighty One of Israel:

Ah, I will ease Me of Mine adversaries, and avenge Me of Mine enemies;

And I will turn My hand upon thee, and purge away thy dross as with lye, and will take away all thine alloy;

And I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counsellors as at the beginning;

afterward thou shalt be called the city of righteousness, the faithful city.

Zion shall be redeemed with justice, and they that return of her with righteousness.

But the destruction of the transgressors and the sinners shall be together, and they that forsake the LORD shall be consumed.

For they shall be ashamed of the terebinths which ye have desired, and ye shall be confounded for the gardens that ye have chosen.

For ye shall be as a terebinth whose leaf fadeth, and as a garden that hath no water.

And the strong shall be as tow, and his work as a spark;

and they shall both burn together, and none shall quench them. {P}

Chapter 2

The word that Isaiah the son of Amoz saw concerning Judah and Jerusalem.

And it shall come to pass in the end of days, that the mountain of the LORD’S house shall be established as the top of the mountains, and shall be exalted above the hills;

and all nations shall flow unto it.

And many peoples shall go and say:

‘Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob;

and He will teach us of His ways, and we will walk in His paths.’

For out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem.

And He shall judge between the hordes, and shall decide for many peoples;

and they shall beat their swords into plowshares, and their spears into pruninghooks; hordes shall not lift up sword against hordes, neither shall they learn war any more. {P}

O house of Jacob, come ye, and let us walk in the light of the LORD.

For Thou hast forsaken Thy people the house of Jacob;

for they are replenished from the east, and with soothsayers like the Philistines, and they please themselves in the brood of aliens.

Their land also is full of silver and gold, neither is there any end of their treasures;

their land also is full of horses, neither is there any end of their chariots.

Their land also is full of idols;

every one worshippeth the work of his own hands, that which his own fingers have made.

And man boweth down, and man lowereth himself;

and Thou canst not bear with them.

Enter into the rock, and hide thee in the dust, from before the terror of the LORD, and from the glory of His majesty.

The lofty looks of man shall be brought low, and the haughtiness of men shall be bowed down, and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day. {P}

For the LORD of hosts hath a day upon all that is proud and lofty, and upon all that is lifted up, and it shall be brought low;

And upon all the cedars of Lebanon that are high and lifted up, and upon all the oaks of Bashan;

And upon all the high mountains, and upon all the hills that are lifted up;

And upon every lofty tower, and upon every fortified wall;

And upon all the ships of Tarshish, and upon all delightful imagery.

And the loftiness of man shall be bowed down, and the haughtiness of men shall be brought low;

and the LORD alone shall be exalted in that day.

And the idols shall utterly pass away.

And men shall go into the caves of the rocks, and into the holes of the earth, from before the terror of the LORD, and from the glory of His majesty, when He ariseth to shake mightily the earth.

In that day a man shall cast away his idols of silver, and his idols of gold, which they made for themselves to worship, to the moles and to the bats;

To go into the clefts of the rocks, and into the crevices of the crags, from before the terror of the LORD, and from the glory of His majesty, when he ariseth to shake mightily the earth.

Cease ye from man, in whose nostrils is a breath;

for how little is he to be accounted! {P}

Chapter 3

For, behold, the Lord, the LORD of hosts, doth take away from Jerusalem and from Judah stay and staff, every stay of bread, and every stay of water;

The mighty man, and the man of war;

the judge, and the prophet, and the diviner, and the elder;

The captain of fifty, and the man of rank, and the counsellor, and the cunning charmer, and the skilful enchanter.

And I will give children to be their princes, and babes shall rule over them.

And the people shall oppress one another, every man his fellow, and every man his neighbour;

the child shall behave insolently against the aged, and the base against the honourable,

For a man shall take hold of his brother of the house of his father:

‘Thou hast a mantle, be thou our ruler, and let this ruin be under thy hand.’

In that day shall he swear, saying:

‘I will not be a healer;

for in my house is neither bread nor a mantle;

ye shall not make me ruler of a people.’

For Jerusalem is ruined, and Judah is fallen;

because their tongue and their doings are against the LORD, to provoke the eyes of His glory.

The show of their countenance doth witness against them;

and they declare their sin as Sodom, they hide it not.

Woe unto their soul!

for they have wrought evil unto themselves.

Say ye of the righteous, that it shall be well with him;

for they shall eat the fruit of their doings.

Woe unto the wicked! it shall be ill with him;

for the work of his hands shall be done to him.

As for My people, a babe is their master, and women rule over them.

O My people, they that lead thee cause thee to err, and destroy the way of thy paths. {P}

The LORD standeth up to plead, and standeth to judge the peoples.

The LORD will enter into judgment with the elders of His people, and the princes thereof:

‘It is ye that have eaten up the vineyard;

the spoil of the poor is in your houses;

What mean ye that ye crush My people, and grind the face of the poor?’

saith the Lord, the GOD of hosts. {S}

Moreover the LORD said:

Because the daughters of Zion are haughty, and walk with stretched-forth necks and wanton eyes, walking and mincing as they go, and making a tinkling with their feet;

Therefore the Lord will smite with a scab the crown of the head of the daughters of Zion, and the LORD will lay bare their secret parts. {S}

In that day the Lord will take away the bravery of their anklets, and the fillets, and the crescents;

the pendants, and the bracelets, and the veils;

the headtires, and the armlets, and the sashes, and the corselets, and the amulets;

the rings, and the nose-jewels;

the aprons, and the mantelets, and the cloaks, and the girdles;

and the gauze robes, and the fine linen, and the turbans, and the mantles.

And it shall come to pass, that instead of sweet spices there shall be rottenness;

and instead of a girdle rags;

and instead of curled hair baldness;

and instead of a stomacher a girding of sackcloth;

branding instead of beauty.

Thy men shall fall by the sword, and thy mighty in the war.

And her gates shall lament and mourn;

and utterly bereft she shall sit upon the ground.

Chapter 4

And seven women shall take hold of one man in that day, saying:

‘We will eat our own bread, and wear our own apparel;

only let us be called by thy name;

take thou away our reproach.’ {S}

In that day shall the growth of the LORD be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land excellent and comely for them that are escaped of Israel.

And it shall come to pass, that he that is left in Zion, and he that remaineth in Jerusalem, shall be called holy, even every one that is written unto life in Jerusalem;

when the Lord shall have washed away the filth of the daughters of Zion, and shall have purged the blood of Jerusalem from the midst thereof, by the spirit of judgment, and by the spirit of destruction.

And the LORD will create over the whole habitation of mount Zion, and over her assemblies, a cloud and smoke by day, and the shining of a flaming fire by night;

for over all the glory shall be a canopy.

And there shall be a pavilion for a shadow in the day-time from the heat, and for a refuge and for a covert from storm and from rain. {P}

Chapter 5

Let me sing of my well-beloved, a song of my beloved touching his vineyard.

My well-beloved had a vineyard in a very fruitful hill;

And he digged it, and cleared it of stones, and planted it with the choicest vine, and built a tower in the midst of it, and also hewed out a vat therein;

and he looked that it should bring forth grapes, and it brought forth wild grapes.

And now, O inhabitants of Jerusalem and men of Judah, judge, I pray you, betwixt me and my vineyard.

What could have been done more to my vineyard, that I have not done in it?

Wherefore, when I looked that it should bring forth grapes, brought it forth wild grapes?

And now come, I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard:

I will take away the hedge thereof, and it shall be eaten up;

I will break down the fence thereof, and it shall be trodden down;

And I will lay it waste:

it shall not be pruned nor hoed, but there shall come up briers and thorns;

I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it.

For the vineyard of the LORD of hosts is the house of Israel, and the men of Judah the plant of His delight;

and He looked for justice, but behold violence;

for righteousness, but behold a cry. {P}

Woe unto them that join house to house, that lay field to field, till there be no room, and ye be made to dwell alone in the midst of the land!

In mine ears said the LORD of hosts:

of a truth many houses shall be desolate, even great and fair, without inhabitant.

For ten acres of vineyard shall yield one bath, and the seed of a homer shall yield an ephah. {S}

Woe unto them that rise up early in the morning, that they may follow strong drink;

that tarry late into the night, till wine inflame them!

And the harp and the psaltery, the tabret and the pipe, and wine, are in their feasts;

but they regard not the work of the LORD, neither have they considered the operation of His hands.

Therefore My people are gone into captivity, for want of knowledge;

and their honourable men are famished, and their multitude are parched with thirst.

Therefore the nether-world hath enlarged her desire, and opened her mouth without measure;

and down goeth their glory, and their tumult, and their uproar, and he that rejoiceth among them.

And man is bowed down, and man is humbled, and the eyes of the lofty are humbled;

But the LORD of hosts is exalted through justice, and God the Holy One is sanctified through righteousness.

Then shall the lambs feed as in their pasture, and the waste places of the fat ones shall wanderers eat. {S}

Woe unto them that draw iniquity with cords of vanity, and sin as it were with a cart rope,

That say:

‘Let Him make speed, let Him hasten His work, that we may see it;

and let the counsel of the Holy One of Israel draw nigh and come, that we may know it!’ {P}

Woe unto them that call evil good, and good evil;

that change darkness into light, and light into darkness;

that change bitter into sweet, and sweet into bitter! {S}

Woe unto them that are wise in their own eyes, and prudent in their own sight! {S}

Woe unto them that are mighty to drink wine, and men of strength to mingle strong drink;

That justify the wicked for a reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! {P}

Therefore as the tongue of fire devoureth the stubble, and as the chaff is consumed in the flame, so their root shall be as rottenness, and their blossom shall go up as dust;

because they have rejected the law of the LORD of hosts, and contemned the word of the Holy One of Israel.

Therefore is the anger of the LORD kindled against His people, and He hath stretched forth His hand against them, and hath smitten them, and the hills did tremble, and their carcasses were as refuse in the midst of the streets.

For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

And He will lift up an ensign to the nations from far, and will hiss unto them from the end of the earth;

and, behold, they shall come with speed swiftly;

Whose arrows are sharp, and all their bows bent;

their horses’ hoofs shall be counted like flint, and their wheels like a whirlwind;

Their roaring shall be like a lion, they shall roar like young lions, yea, they shall roar, and lay hold of the prey, and carry it away safe, and there shall be none to deliver.

And they shall roar against them in that day like the roaring of the sea;

and if one look unto the land, behold darkness and distress, and the light is darkened in the skies thereof. {P}

Chapter 6

In the year that king Uzziah died I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne high and lifted up, and His train filled the temple.

Above Him stood the seraphim;

each one had six wings:

with twain he covered his face and with twain he covered his feet, and with twain he did fly.

And one called unto another, and said:

Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD of hosts; the whole earth is full of His glory.

And the posts of the door were moved at the voice of them that called, and the house was filled with smoke.

Then said I:

Woe is me! for I am undone;

because I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips;

for mine eyes have seen the King, the LORD of hosts.

Then flew unto me one of the seraphim, with a glowing stone in his hand, which he had taken with the tongs from off the altar;

and he touched my mouth with it, and said:

Lo, this hath touched thy lips;

and thine iniquity is taken away, and thy sin expiated.

And I heard the voice of the Lord, saying:

Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?

Then I said:

‘Here am I;

send me.’

And He said:

‘Go, and tell this people:

hear ye indeed, but understand not;

and see ye indeed, but perceive not.

Make the heart of this people fat, and make their ears heavy, and shut their eyes;

lest they, seeing with their eyes, and hearing with their ears, and understanding with their heart, return, and be healed.’

11 Then said I:

‘Lord, how long?’

And He answered:

‘Until cities be waste without inhabitant, and houses without man, and the land become utterly waste,

And the LORD have removed men far away, and the forsaken places be many in the midst of the land.

And if there be yet a tenth in it, it shall again be eaten up;

as a terebinth, and as an oak, whose stock remaineth, when they cast their leaves, so the holy seed shall be the stock thereof.’ {P}

Chapter 7

And it came to pass in the days of Ahaz the son of Jotham, the son of Uzziah, king of Judah, that Rezin the king of Aram, and Pekah the son of Remaliah, king of Israel, went up to Jerusalem to war against it;

but could not prevail against it.

And it was told the house of David, saying:

‘Aram is confederate with Ephraim.’

And his heart was moved, and the heart of his people, as the trees of the forest are moved with the wind. {S}

Then said the LORD unto Isaiah:

‘Go forth now to meet Ahaz, thou, and Shear-jashub thy son, at the end of the conduit of the upper pool, in the highway of the fullers’ field;

and say unto him:

Keep calm, and be quiet;

fear not, neither let thy heart be faint, because of these two tails of smoking firebrands, for the fierce anger of Rezin and Aram, and of the son of Remaliah.

Because Aram hath counselled evil against thee, Ephraim also, and the son of Remaliah, saying:

Let us go up against Judah, and vex it, and let us make a breach therein for us, and set up a king in the midst of it, even the son of Tabeel; {P}

thus saith the Lord GOD:

It shall not stand, neither shall it come to pass.

For the head of Aram is Damascus, and the head of Damascus is Rezin; and within threescore and five years shall Ephraim be broken, that it be not a people;

And the head of Ephraim is Samaria, and the head of Samaria is Remaliah’s son.

If ye will not have faith, surely ye shall not be established.’ {P}

And the LORD spoke again unto Ahaz, saying:

‘Ask thee a sign of the LORD thy God:

ask it either in the depth, or in the height above.’

But Ahaz said:

‘I will not ask, neither will I try the LORD.’

And he said:

‘Hear ye now, O house of David:

Is it a small thing for you to weary men, that ye will weary my God also?

Therefore the Lord Himself shall give you a sign:

behold, the young woman shall conceive, and bear a son, and shall call his name Immanuel.

Curd and honey shall he eat, when he knoweth to refuse the evil, and choose the good.

Yea, before the child shall know to refuse the evil, and choose the good, the land whose two kings thou hast a horror of shall be forsaken.

The LORD shall bring upon thee, and upon thy people, and upon thy father’s house, days that have not come, from the day that Ephraim departed from Judah; even the king of Assyria.’ {P}

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the LORD shall hiss for the fly that is in the uttermost part of the rivers of Egypt, and for the bee that is in the land of Assyria.

And they shall come, and shall rest all of them in the rugged valleys, and in the holes of the rocks, and upon all thorns, and upon all brambles.

In that day shall the Lord shave with a razor that is hired in the parts beyond the River, even with the king of Assyria, the head and the hair of the feet;

and it shall also sweep away the beard. {P}

And it shall come to pass in that day, that a man shall rear a young cow, and two sheep;

and it shall come to pass, for the abundance of milk that they shall give, he shall eat curd;

for curd and honey shall every one eat that is left in the midst of the land. {S}

And it shall come to pass in that day, that every place, where there were a thousand vines at a thousand silverlings, shall even be for briers and thorns.

With arrows and with bow shall one come thither;

because all the land shall become briers and thorns.

And all the hills that were digged with the mattock, thou shalt not come thither for fear of briers and thorns, but it shall be for the sending forth of oxen, and for the treading of sheep. {P}
