For the Leader;
upon Jonath-elem-rehokim.
[A Psalm] of David;
Michtam; {N}
when the Philistines took him in Gath.
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

Be favorable unto me, O Savior, for man would swallow me up;
all the day he, fighting, oppresseth me.
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

They that lie in wait for me would swallow me up all the day;
for they are many that fight against me, O Most High,
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

In the day that I am afraid, I will put my trust in Thee.
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

In the Savior–
I will praise His word– {N}
in the Savior do I trust, I will not be afraid;
what can flesh do unto me?
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

All the day they trouble mine affairs;
all their thoughts are against me for evil.
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

They gather themselves together, they hide themselves, they mark my steps;
according as they have waited for my soul.
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

Because of iniquity cast them out;
in anger bring down the peoples, O Savior.
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

Thou has counted my wanderings;
put Thou my tears into Thy bottle;
are they not in Thy book?
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

Then shall mine enemies turn back in the day that I call;
this I know, that the Savior is for me.
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

In the Savior–
I will praise His word–
in The Eternal One–
I will praise His word–
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

In the Savior do I trust, I will not be afraid;
what can man do unto me?
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

Thy vows are upon me, O Savior;
I will render thank-offerings unto Thee.
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

For Thou hast delivered my soul from death;
hast Thou not delivered my feet from stumbling? {N}
that I may walk before the Savior in the light of the living. {P}
*I Know That the Savior Is For Me*

Chapter 57 *In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

Be favorable unto me, O Savior, be favorable unto me, for in Thee hath my soul taken refuge; {N}
yea, in the shadow of Thy wings will I take refuge, until calamities be overpast.
*In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

I will cry unto the Savior Most High;
unto the Savior that accomplisheth it for me.
*In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

ד יִשְׁלַח מִשָּׁמַיִם, וְיוֹשִׁיעֵנִי– חֵרֵף שֹׁאֲפִי סֶלָה;
He will send from heaven, and save me, when he that would swallow me up taunteth;

the Savior shall send forth His kindness and His truth.
*In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

My soul is among lions, I do lie down among them that are aflame; {N}
even the sons of men, whose teeth are spears and arrows, and their tongue a sharp sword.
*In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

Be Thou exalted, O Savior, above the heavens;
Thy glory be above all the earth.
*In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

They have prepared a net for my steps, my soul is bowed down; {N}
they have digged a pit before me, they are fallen into the midst thereof themselves.
*In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

[Selah]

My heart is stedfast, O Savior, my heart is stedfast;
I will sing, yea, I will sing praises.
*In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

Awake, my glory;
awake, psaltery and harp;
I will awake the dawn.
*In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

I will give thanks unto Thee O Master, among the peoples;
I will sing praises unto Thee among the peoples.
*In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

For Thy kindness is great unto the heavens, and Thy truth unto the skies.
*In Thee Hath My Soul Taken Refuge*

Be Thou exalted, O Savior, above the heavens;
Thy glory be above all the earth. {P}

For the Leader;
Al-tashheth.
[A Psalm] of David;
Michtam.
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

Do ye indeed speak as a righteous company?
Do ye judge with equity the sons of men?
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

Yea, in heart ye work wickedness;
ye weigh out in the earth the violence of your hands.
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

The wicked are estranged from the womb;
the speakers of lies go astray as soon as they are born.
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

Their venom is like the venom of a serpent;
they are like the deaf asp that stoppeth her ear;
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

Which hearkeneth not to the voice of charmers, or of the most cunning binder of spells.
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

Break their teeth, O Savior, in their mouth;
break out the cheek-teeth of the young lions, O Eternal One.
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

ח יִמָּאֲסוּ כְמוֹ-מַיִם, יִתְהַלְּכוּ-לָמוֹ;
Let them melt away as water that runneth apace; {N}
when he aimeth his arrows, let them be as though they were cut off.
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

Let them be as a snail which melteth and passeth away;
like the untimely births of a woman, that have not seen the sun.
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

Before your pots can feel the thorns, He will sweep it away with a whirlwind, the raw and the burning alike.
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

The righteous shall rejoice when he seeth the vengeance;
he shall wash his feet in the blood of the wicked.
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

And men shall say:
‘Verily there is a reward for the righteous;
verily there is a Savior that judgeth in the earth.’ {P}
*There Is A Reward For The Righteous*

Chapter 59 *I Will Sing of Thy Strength*
א לַמְנַצֵּחַ אַל-תַּשְׁחֵת, לְדָוִד מִכְתָּם: בִּשְׁלֹחַ שָׁאוּל;
For the Leader;
Al-tashheth.
[A Psalm] of David;
Michtam;
when Saul sent, {N}
and they watched the house to kill him.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

Deliver me from mine enemies, my Savior;
set me on high from them that rise up against me.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

Deliver me from the workers of iniquity, and save me from the men of blood.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

ד כִּי הִנֵּה אָרְבוּ, לְנַפְשִׁי– יָגוּרוּ עָלַי עַזִּים;
For, lo, they lie in wait for my soul;
the impudent gather themselves together against me; {N}
not for my transgression, nor for my sin, O Eternal One.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

Without my fault, they run and prepare themselves;
awake Thou to help me, and behold.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

ו וְאַתָּה יְהוָה-אֱלֹהִים צְבָאוֹת, אֱלֹהֵי יִשְׂרָאֵל– הָקִיצָה, לִפְקֹד כָּל-הַגּוֹיִם;
Thou therefore, O Eternal One the Mighty of hosts, the Savior of Israel, arouse Thyself to punish all the gatherings; {N}
be not favorable to any iniquitous traitors.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

[Selah]

They return at evening, they howl like a dog, and go round about the city.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

Behold, they belch out with their mouth;
swords are in their lips:
‘For who doth hear?’
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

But Thou, O Eternal One, shalt laugh at them;
Thou shalt have all the gatherings in derision.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

Because of his strength, I will wait for Thee;
for the Savior is my high tower.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

The Savior, His kindness, will come to meet me;
the Savior will let me gaze upon mine adversaries.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

Slay them not, lest my people forget, make them wander to and fro by Thy power, and bring them down, O Master, our shield.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

For the sin of their mouth, and the words of their lips, {N}
let them even be taken in their pride, and for cursing and lying which they speak.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

Consume them in wrath, consume them, that they be no more; {N}
and let them know that the Savior ruleth in Jacob, unto the ends of the earth.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

[Selah]

And they return at evening, they howl like a dog, and go round about the city;
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

They wander up and down to devour, and tarry all night if they have not their fill.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

But as for me, I will sing of Thy strength;
yea, I will sing aloud of Thy kindness in the morning; {N}
for Thou hast been my high tower, and a refuge in the day of my distress.
*I Will Sing of Thy Strength*

O my strength, unto Thee will I sing praises;
for the Savior is my high tower, the Savior is my kindness. {P}

Thou hast been angry;
O restore us.

That Thy beloved may be delivered, save with Thy right hand, and answer me.
*Through the Savior We Will Do Valiantly*

The Savior spoke in His holiness, that I would exult;
that I would divide Shechem, and mete out the valley of Succoth.

Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who will lead me unto Edom?

And The Eternal One said unto me:
‘Take thee a great tablet, and write upon it in common script:
The spoil speedeth, the prey hasteth;

and I will take unto Me faithful witnesses to record, Uriah the priest, and Zechariah the son of Jeberechiah.’

And I went unto the prophetess;
and she conceived, and bore a son. {S}
Then said The Eternal One unto me:
‘Call his name Maher-shalal-hashbaz.

For before the child shall have knowledge to cry:
My father,
and:
My mother,
the riches of Damascus and the spoil of Samaria shall be carried away before the king of Assyria.’ {S}

And The Eternal One spoke unto me yet again, saying:

Forasmuch as this people hath refused the waters of Shiloah that go softly, and rejoiceth with Rezin and Remaliah’s son;

Now therefore, behold, My Savior bringeth up upon them the waters of the River, mighty and many, even the king of Assyria and all his glory;
and he shall come up over all his channels, and go over all his banks;

And he shall sweep through Judah overflowing as he passeth through he shall reach even to the neck;
and the stretching out of his wings shall fill the breadth of thy land, O Immanuel. {S}

Make an uproar, O ye peoples, and ye shall be broken in pieces;
and give ear, all ye of far lands;
gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces;
gird yourselves, and ye shall be broken in pieces.

Take counsel together, and it shall be brought to nought;
speak the word, and it shall not stand;
for the Savior is with us. {S}

For The Eternal One spoke thus to me with a strong hand, admonishing me that I should not walk in the way of this people, saying:

‘Say ye not:
A conspiracy, concerning all whereof this people do say:
A conspiracy;
neither fear ye their fear, nor account it dreadful.

The Eternal One of hosts, Him shall ye sanctify;
and let Him be your fear, and let Him be your dread.

And He shall be for a sanctuary;
but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.

And many among them shall stumble, and fall, and be broken, and be snared, and be taken.’ {P}

‘Bind up the testimony, seal the instruction among My disciples.’

And I will wait for The Eternal One, that hideth His face from the house of Jacob, and I will look for Him.

Behold, I myself and the children whom The Eternal One hath given me shall be for signs and for wonders in Israel from The Eternal One of hosts, who dwelleth in mount Zion. {S}

And when they shall say unto you:
‘Seek unto the ghosts and the familiar spirits, that chirp and that mutter;
should not a people seek unto their mighty?
on behalf of the living unto the dead

for instruction and for testimony?’–
Surely they will speak according to this word, wherein there is no light.–

And they shall pass this way that are sore bestead and hungry;
and it shall come to pass that, when they shall be hungry, they shall fret themselves, and curse by their king and by their the mighty, and, whether they turn their faces upward,

or look unto the earth, behold distress and darkness, the gloom of anguish, and outspread thick darkness.

For is there no gloom to her that was stedfast?
Now the former hath lightly afflicted the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali, but the latter hath dealt a more grievous blow by the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, in the district of the gatherings.

The people that walked in darkness have seen a great light;
they that dwelt in the land of the shadow of death, upon them hath the light shined.

Thou hast multiplied the horde, Thou hast increased their joy;
they joy before Thee according to the joy in harvest, as men rejoice when they divide the spoil.

For the yoke of his burden, and the staff of his shoulder, the rod of his oppressor, Thou hast broken as in the day of Midian.

For every boot stamped with fierceness, and every cloak rolled in blood, shall even be for burning, for fuel of fire.

For a child is born unto us, a son is given unto us;
and the government is upon his shoulder;
and his name is called Pele-joez-el-gibbor-Abi-ad-sar-shalom;

That the government may be increased, and of peace there be no end, upon the throne of David, and upon his kingdom, to establish it, and to uphold it through justice and through righteousness from henceforth even for ever.
The zeal of The Eternal One of hosts doth perform this. {P}

My Savior sent a word into Jacob, and it hath lighted upon Israel.

And all the people shall know, even Ephraim and the inhabitant of Samaria, that say in pride and in arrogancy of heart:

‘The bricks are fallen, but we will build with hewn stones;
the sycamores are cut down, but cedars will we put in their place.’

Therefore The Eternal One doth set upon high the adversaries of Rezin against him, and spur his enemies;

The Arameans on the east, and the Philistines on the west;
and they devour Israel with open mouth.
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

Yet the people turneth not unto Him that smiteth them, neither do they seek The Eternal One of hosts. {S}

Therefore The Eternal One doth cut off from Israel head and tail, palm-branch and rush, in one day.

The elder and the man of rank, he is the head;
and the prophet that teacheth lies, he is the tail.

For they that lead this people cause them to err;
and they that are led of them are destroyed.

Therefore the Master shall have no joy in their young men, neither shall He have compassion on their fatherless and widows;
for every one is ungodly and an evil-doer, and every mouth speaketh wantonness.
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still.

For wickedness burneth as the fire;
it devoureth the briers and thorns;
yea, it kindleth in the thickets of the forest, and they roll upward in thick clouds of smoke.

Through the wrath of The Eternal One of hosts is the land burnt up;
the people also are as the fuel of fire;
no man spareth his brother.

And one snatcheth on the right hand, and is hungry;
and he eateth on the left hand, and is not satisfied;
they eat every man the flesh of his own arm:

Manasseh, Ephraim;
and Ephraim, Manasseh;
and they together are against Judah.
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still. {S}

Woe unto them that decree unrighteous decrees, and to the writers that write iniquity;

To turn aside the needy from judgment, and to take away the right of the poor of My people, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey!

And what will ye do in the day of visitation, and in the ruin which shall come from far?
To whom will ye flee for help?
And where will ye leave your glory?

They can do nought except crouch under the captives, and fall under the slain.
For all this His anger is not turned away, but His hand is stretched out still. {P}

O Asshur, the rod of Mine anger, in whose hand as a staff is Mine indignation!

I do send him against an ungodly gathering, and against the people of My wrath do I give him a charge, to take the spoil, and to take the prey, and to tread them down like the mire of the streets.

Howbeit he meaneth not so, neither doth his heart think so;
but it is in his heart to destroy, and to cut off gatherings not a few.

For he saith:
‘Are not my princes all of them kings?

Is not Calno as Carchemish?
Is not Hamath as Arpad?
Is not Samaria as Damascus?

As my hand hath reached the kingdoms of the idols, whose graven images did exceed them of Jerusalem and of Samaria;

Shall I not, as I have done unto Samaria and her idols, so do to Jerusalem and her idols?’ {P}

Wherefore it shall come to pass, that when My Savior hath performed His whole work upon mount Zion and on Jerusalem, I will punish the fruit of the arrogant heart of the king of Assyria, and the glory of his haughty looks.

For he hath said:
by the strength of my hand I have done it, and by my wisdom, for I am prudent;
in that I have removed the bounds of the peoples, and have robbed their treasures, and have brought down as one mighty the inhabitants;

יד וַתִּמְצָא כַקֵּן יָדִי, לְחֵיל הָעַמִּים, וְכֶאֱסֹף בֵּיצִים עֲזֻבוֹת, כָּל-הָאָרֶץ אֲנִי אָסָפְתִּי; וְלֹא הָיָה נֹדֵד כָּנָף, וּפֹצֶה פֶה וּמְצַפְצֵף. 14 And my hand hath found as a nest the riches of the peoples;
and as one gathereth eggs that are forsaken, have I gathered all the earth;
and there was none that moved the wing, or that opened the mouth, or chirped.

{פ} 15 Should the axe boast itself against him that heweth therewith?
Should the saw magnify itself against him that moveth it?
as if a rod should move them that lift it up, or as if a staff should lift up him that is not wood. {P}

Therefore will the Master, The Eternal One of hosts, send among his fat ones leanness;
and under his glory there shall be kindled a burning like the burning of fire.

And the light of Israel shall be for a fire, and his Holy One for a flame;
and it shall burn and devour his thorns and his briers in one day.

And the glory of his forest and of his fruitful field, he will consume both soul and body;
and it shall be as when a sick man wasteth away.

And the remnant of the trees of his forest shall be few, that a child may write them down. {S}

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the remnant of Israel, and they that are escaped of the house of Jacob, shall no more again stay upon him that smote them; but shall stay upon The Eternal One, the Holy One of Israel, in truth.

A remnant shall return, even the remnant of Jacob, unto the Savior the Mighty.

For though thy people, O Israel, be as the sand of the sea, only a remnant of them shall return;
an extermination is determined, overflowing with righteousness.

For an extermination wholly determined shall My Savior, The Eternal One of hosts, make in the midst of all the earth. {P}

Therefore thus saith My Savior, The Eternal One of hosts:
O My people that dwellest in Zion, be not afraid of Asshur, though he smite thee with the rod, and lift up his staff against thee, after the manner of Egypt.

For yet a very little while, and the indignation shall be accomplished, and Mine anger shall be to their destruction.

And The Eternal One of hosts shall stir up against him a scourge, as in the slaughter of Midian at the Rock of Oreb;
and as His rod was over the sea, so shall He lift it up after the manner of Egypt.

And it shall come to pass in that day, that his burden shall depart from off thy shoulder, and his yoke from off thy neck, and the yoke shall be destroyed by reason of fatness.

He is come to Aiath, he is passed through Migron;
at Michmas he layeth up his baggage;

They are gone over the pass;
they have taken up their lodging at Geba;
Ramah trembleth;
Gibeath-shaul is fled.

Cry thou with a shrill voice, O daughter of Gallim!
Hearken, O Laish!
O thou poor Anathoth!

Madmenah is in mad flight;
the inhabitants of Gebim flee to cover.

This very day shall he halt at Nob, shaking his hand at the mount of the daughter of Zion, the hill of Jerusalem. {P}

Behold, the Master, The Eternal One of hosts, shall lop the boughs with terror;
and the high ones of stature shall be hewn down, and the lofty shall be laid low.

And He shall cut down the thickets of the forest with iron, and Lebanon shall fall by a mighty one. {S}

And there shall come forth a shoot out of the stock of Jesse, and a twig shall grow forth out of his roots.

And the spirit of The Eternal One shall rest upon him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and of the fear of The Eternal One.

And his delight shall be in the fear of The Eternal One;
and he shall not judge after the sight of his eyes, neither decide after the hearing of his ears;

But with righteousness shall he judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the land;
and he shall smite the land with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips shall he slay the wicked.

And righteousness shall be the girdle of his loins, and faithfulness the girdle of his reins.

And the wolf shall dwell with the lamb, and the leopard shall lie down with the kid;
and the calf and the young lion and the fatling together;
and a little child shall lead them.

And the cow and the bear shall feed;
their young ones shall lie down together;
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.

And the sucking child shall play on the hole of the asp, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the basilisk’s den.

They shall not hurt nor destroy in all My holy mountain;
for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of The Eternal One, as the waters cover the sea. {S}

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the root of Jesse, that standeth for an ensign of the peoples, unto him shall the gatherings seek;
and his resting-place shall be glorious. {P}

And it shall come to pass in that day, that My Savior will set His hand again the second time to recover the remnant of His people, that shall remain from Assyria, and from Egypt, and from Pathros, and from Cush, and from Elam, and from Shinar, and from Hamath, and from the islands of the sea.

And He will set up an ensign for the gatherings, and will assemble the dispersed of Israel, and gather together the scattered of Judah from the four corners of the earth.

The envy also of Ephraim shall depart, and they that harass Judah shall be cut off;
Ephraim shall not envy Judah, and Judah shall not vex Ephraim.

And they shall fly down upon the shoulder of the Philistines on the west;
together shall they spoil the sons of the east;
they shall put forth their hand upon Edom and Moab;
and the sons of Ammon shall obey them.

And The Eternal One will utterly destroy the tongue of the Egyptian sea;
and with His scorching wind will He shake His hand over the River, and will smite it into seven streams, and cause men to march over dry-shod.

And there shall be a highway for the remnant of His people, that shall remain from Assyria, like as there was for Israel in the day that he came up out of the land of Egypt.

And in that day thou shalt say:
‘I will give thanks unto Thee, O Eternal;
for though Thou was angry with me, Thine anger is turned away, and Thou comfortest me.

Behold, the Savior is my yeshua;
I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for Yah The Eternal One is my strength and song;
and He is become my yeshua.’

Therefore with joy shall ye draw water out of the wells of yeshua.

And in that day shall ye say:
‘Give thanks unto The Eternal One, proclaim His name, declare His doings among the peoples, make mention that His name is exalted.

Sing unto The Eternal One;
for He hath done gloriously;
this is made known in all the earth.

Cry aloud and shout, thou inhabitant of Zion, for great is the Holy One of Israel in the midst of thee.’ {S}

The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.

Set ye up an ensign upon the high mountain, lift up the voice unto them, wave the hand, that they may go into the gates of the nobles.

I have commanded My consecrated ones, yea, I have called My mighty ones for mine anger, even My proudly exulting ones.

Hark, a tumult in the mountains, like as of a great people!
Hark, the uproar of the kingdoms of the gatherings gathered together!
The Eternal One of hosts mustereth the host of the battle.

They come from a far country, from the end of heaven, even The Eternal One, and the weapons of His indignation, to destroy the whole earth. {S}

Howl ye;
for the day of The Eternal One is at hand;
as destruction from the Savior shall it come.

Therefore shall all hands be slack, and every heart of man shall melt.

And they shall be affrighted;
pangs and throes shall take hold of them;
they shall be in pain as a woman in travail;
they shall look aghast one at another;
their faces shall be faces of flame.

Behold, the day of The Eternal One cometh, cruel, and full of wrath and fierce anger;
to make the earth a desolation, and to destroy the sinners thereof out of it,

For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light;
the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine.

And I will visit upon the world their evil, and upon the wicked their iniquity;
and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the tyrants.

I will make man more rare than fine gold, even man than the pure gold of Ophir.

Therefore I will make the heavens to tremble, and the earth shall be shaken out of her place, for the wrath of The Eternal One of hosts, and for the day of His fierce anger.

And it shall come to pass, that as the chased gazelle, and as sheep that no man gathereth, they shall turn every man to his own people, and shall flee every man to his own land.

Every one that is found shall be thrust through;
and every one that is caught shall fall by the sword.

Their babes also shall be dashed in pieces before their eyes;
their houses shall be spoiled, and their wives ravished.

Behold, I will stir up the Medes against them, who shall not regard silver, and as for gold, they shall not delight in it.

And their bows shall dash the young men in pieces;
and they shall have no pity on the fruit of the womb;
their eye shall not spare children.

And Babylon, the glory of kingdoms, the beauty of the Chaldeans’ pride, shall be as when the Savior overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah.

It shall never be inhabited, neither shall it be dwelt in from generation to generation;
neither shall the Arabian pitch tent there;
neither shall the shepherds make their fold there.

But wild-cats shall lie there;
and their houses shall be full of ferrets;
and ostriches shall dwell there, and satyrs shall dance there.

And jackals shall howl in their castles, and wild-dogs in the pleasant palaces;
and her time is near to come, and her days shall not be prolonged.

For the Eternal will have compassion on Jacob, and will yet choose Israel, and set them in their own land;
and the stranger shall join himself with them, and they shall cleave to the house of Jacob.

And the peoples shall take them, and bring them to their place;
and the house of Israel shall possess them in the land of The Eternal One for servants and for handmaids;
and they shall take them captive, whose captives they were;
and they shall rule over their oppressors. {S}

And it shall come to pass in the day that The Eternal One shall give thee rest from thy travail, and from thy trouble, and from the hard service wherein thou wast made to serve,

that thou shalt take up this parable against the king of Babylon, and say:
How hath the oppressor ceased!
the exactress of gold ceased!

The Eternal One hath broken the staff of the wicked, the sceptre of the rulers,

That smote the peoples in wrath with an incessant stroke, that ruled the nations in anger, with a persecution that none restrained.

The whole earth is at rest, and is quiet;
they break forth into singing.

Yea, the cypresses rejoice at thee, and the cedars of Lebanon:
‘Since thou art laid down, no feller is come up against us.’

The nether-world from beneath is moved for thee to meet thee at thy coming;
the shades are stirred up for thee, even all the chief ones of the earth;
all the kings of the gatherings are raised up from their thrones.

All they do answer and say unto thee:
‘Art thou also become weak as we?
Art thou become like unto us?

Thy pomp is brought down to the nether-world, and the noise of thy psalteries;
the maggot is spread under thee, and the worms cover thee.’

How art thou fallen from heaven, O day-star, son of the morning!
How art thou cut down to the ground, that didst cast lots over the gatherings!

And thou saidst in thy heart:
‘I will ascend into heaven, above the stars of the Savior will I exalt my throne, and I will sit upon the mount of meeting, in the uttermost parts of the north;

I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;
I will be like the Most High.’

Yet thou shalt be brought down to the nether-world, to the uttermost parts of the pit.

They that saw thee do narrowly look upon thee, they gaze earnestly at thee:
‘Is this the man that made the earth to tremble, that did shake kingdoms;

That made the world as a wilderness, and destroyed the cities thereof;
that opened not the house of his prisoners?’

All the kings of the gatherings, all of them, sleep in glory, every one in his own house.

But thou art cast forth away from thy grave like an abhorred offshoot, in the raiment of the slain, that are thrust through with the sword, that go down to the pavement of the pit, as a carcass trodden under foot.

Thou shalt not be joined with them in burial, because thou hast destroyed thy land, thou hast slain thy people;
the seed of evil-doers shall not be named for ever.

Prepare ye slaughter for his sons for the iniquity of their fathers;
that they rise not up, and possess the earth, and fill the face of the world with cities.

And I will rise up against them, saith The Eternal One of hosts, and cut off from Babylon name and remnant, and offshoot and offspring, saith The Eternal One.

I will also make it a possession for the bittern, and pools of water;
and I will sweep it with the besom of destruction, saith The Eternal One of hosts. {S}

The Eternal One of hosts hath sworn, saying:
Surely as I have thought, so shall it come to pass;
and as I have purposed, so shall it stand,

That I will break Asshur in My land, and upon My mountains tread him under foot;
then shall his yoke depart from off them, and his burden depart from off their shoulder.

This is the purpose that is purposed upon the whole earth;
and this is the hand that is stretched out upon all the gatherings.

For The Eternal One of hosts hath purposed, and who shall disannul it?
And His hand is stretched out, and who shall turn it back? {P}

In the year that king Ahaz died was this burden.

Rejoice not, O Philistia, all of thee, because the rod that smote thee is broken:
for out of the serpent’s root shall come forth a basilisk, and his fruit shall be a flying serpent.

And the first-born of the poor shall feed, and the needy shall lie down in safety;
and I will kill thy root with famine, and thy remnant shall be slain.

Howl, O gate;
cry, O city;
melt away, O Philistia, all of thee;
for there cometh a smoke out of the north, and there is no straggler in his ranks.

What then shall one answer the messengers of the gathering?
That The Eternal One hath founded Zion, and in her shall the afflicted of His people take refuge. {P}

The burden of Moab.
For in the night that Ar of Moab is laid waste, he is brought to ruin;
for in the night that Kir of Moab is laid waste, he is brought to ruin.

He is gone up to Baith, and to Dibon, to the high places, to weep;
upon Nebo, and upon Medeba, Moab howleth;
on all their heads is baldness, every beard is shaven.

In their streets they gird themselves with sackcloth;
on their housetops, and in their broad places, every one howleth, weeping profusely.

And Heshbon crieth out, and Elealeh;
their voice is heard even unto Jahaz;
therefore the armed men of Moab cry aloud;
his soul is faint within him.

My heart crieth out for Moab;
her fugitives reach unto Zoar, a heifer of three years old;
for by the ascent of Luhith with weeping they go up;
for in the way of Horonaim they raise up a cry of destruction.

For the Waters of Nimrim shall be desolate;
for the grass is withered away, the herbage faileth, there is no green thing.

Therefore the abundance they have gotten, and that which they have laid up, shall they carry away to the brook of the willows.

For the cry is gone round about the borders of Moab;
the howling thereof unto Eglaim, and the howling thereof unto Beer-elim.

For the waters of Dimon are full of blood;
for I will bring yet more upon Dimon, a lion upon him that escapeth of Moab, and upon the remnant of the land.

Send ye the lambs for the ruler of the land from the crags that are toward the wilderness, unto the mount of the daughter of Zion.

For it shall be that, as wandering birds, as a scattered nest, so shall the daughters of Moab be at the fords of Arnon.

‘Give counsel, execute justice;
make thy shadow as the night in the midst of the noonday;
hide the outcasts;
betray not the fugitive.

Let mine outcasts dwell with thee;
as for Moab, be thou a covert to him from the face of the spoiler.’
For the extortion is at an end, spoiling ceaseth, they that trampled down are consumed out of the land; {S}

And a throne is established through kindness, and there sitteth thereon in truth, in the tent of David, one that judgeth, and seeketh justice, and is ready in righteousness.

We have heard of the pride of Moab;
he is very proud;
even of his haughtiness, and his pride, and his arrogancy, his ill-founded boastings.

Therefore shall Moab wail for Moab, every one shall wail;
for the sweet cakes of Kir-hareseth shall ye mourn, sorely stricken.

For the fields of Heshbon languish, and the vine of Sibmah, whose choice plants did overcome the lords of gatherings;
they reached even unto Jazer, they wandered into the wilderness;
her branches were spread abroad, they passed over the sea.

Therefore I will weep with the weeping of Jazer for the vine of Sibmah;
I will water thee with my tears, O Heshbon, and Elealeh;
for upon thy summer fruits and upon thy harvest the battle shout is fallen.

And gladness and joy are taken away out of the fruitful field;
and in the vineyards there shall be no singing, neither shall there be shouting;
no treader shall tread out wine in the presses;
I have made the vintage shout to cease.

Wherefore my heart moaneth like a harp for Moab, and mine inward parts for Kir-heres.

And it shall come to pass, when it is seen that Moab hath wearied himself upon the high place, that he shall come to his sanctuary to pray;
but he shall not prevail. {S}

This is the word that The Eternal One spoke concerning Moab in time past.

But now The Eternal One hath spoken, saying:
‘Within three years, as the years of a hireling, and the glory of Moab shall wax contemptible for all his great multitude;
and the remnant shall be very small and without strength.’ {P}

The burden of Damascus.
Behold, Damascus is taken away from being a city, and it shall be a ruinous heap.

The cities of Aroer are forsaken;
they shall be for flocks, which shall lie down, and none shall make them afraid.

The fortress also shall cease from Ephraim, and the kingdom from Damascus;
and the remnant of Aram shall be as the glory of the sons of Israel, saith The Eternal One of hosts. {P}

And it shall come to pass in that day, that the glory of Jacob shall be made thin, and the fatness of his flesh shall wax lean.

And it shall be as when the harvestman gathereth the standing corn, and reapeth the ears with his arm;
yea, it shall be as when one gleaneth ears in the valley of Rephaim.

Yet there shall be left therein gleanings, as at the beating of an olive-tree, two or three berries in the top of the uppermost bough, four or five in the branches of the fruitful tree, saith The Eternal One, the the Savior of Israel.

In that day shall a man regard his Maker, and his eyes shall look to the Holy One of Israel.

And he shall not regard the altars, the work of his hands, neither shall he look to that which his fingers have made, either the Asherim, or the sun-images. {S}

In that day shall his strong cities be as the forsaken places, which were forsaken from before the sons of Israel, after the manner of woods and lofty forests;
and it shall be a desolation.

For thou hast forgotten the the Savior of thy salvation, and thou hast not been mindful of the Rock of thy stronghold;
therefore thou didst plant plants of pleasantness, and didst set it with slips of a stranger;

In the day of thy planting thou didst make it to grow, and in the morning thou didst make thy seed to blossom–
a heap of boughs in the day of grief and of desperate pain. {S}

Ah, the uproar of many peoples, that roar like the roaring of the seas;
and the rushing of peoples, that rush like the rushing of mighty waters!

The peoples shall rush like the rushing of many waters;
but He shall rebuke them, and they shall flee far off, and shall be chased as the chaff of the mountains before the wind, and like the whirling dust before the storm.

At eventide behold terror;
and before the morning they are not.
This is the portion of them that spoil us, and the lot of them that rob us. {P}

Ah, land of the buzzing of wings, which is beyond the rivers of Ethiopia;

That sendeth ambassadors by the sea, and in vessels of papyrus upon the waters!
Go, ye swift messengers, to a gathering scattered and independent, to a people terrible from their beginning onward;
a nation that is sturdy and treadeth down, whose land the rivers divide!

All ye inhabitants of the world, and ye dwellers on the earth, when an ensign is lifted up on the mountains, see ye;
and when the horn is blown, hear ye. {S}

For thus hath The Eternal One said unto me:
I will hold Me still, and I will look on in My dwelling-place, like clear heat in sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest.

For before the harvest, when the blossom is over, and the bud becometh a ripening grape, He will cut off the sprigs with pruning-hooks, and the shoots will He take away and lop off.

They shall be left together unto the ravenous birds of the mountains, and to the beasts of the earth;
and the ravenous birds shall summer upon them, and all the beasts of the earth shall winter upon them. {S}

In that time shall a present be brought unto The Eternal One of hosts of a people scattered and independent, and from a people terrible from their beginning onward;
a gathering that is connected and trampling, whose land the rivers divide, to the place of the name of The Eternal One of hosts, the mount Zion. {P}

The burden of Egypt.
Behold, The Eternal One rideth upon a swift cloud, and cometh unto Egypt;
and the idols of Egypt shall be moved at His presence, and the heart of Egypt shall melt within it.

And I will spur Egypt against Egypt;
and they shall fight every one against his brother, and everyone against his neighbour;
city against city, and kingdom against kingdom.

And the spirit of Egypt shall be made empty within it;
and I will make void the counsel thereof;
and they shall seek unto the idols, and to the whisperers, and to the ghosts, and to the familiar spirits.

And I will give over the Egyptians into the hand of cruel masters;
and a fierce king shall rule over them, saith the Master, The Eternal One of hosts.

And the waters shall fail from the sea, and the river shall be drained dry,

And the rivers shall become foul;
the streams of Egypt shall be minished and dried up;
the reeds and flags shall wither.

The mosses by the Nile, by the brink of the Nile, and all that is sown by the Nile, shall become dry, be driven away, and be no more.

The fishers also shall lament, and all they that cast angle into the Nile shall mourn, and they that spread nets upon the waters shall languish.

Moreover they that work in combed flax, and they that weave cotton, shall be ashamed.

And her foundations shall be crushed, all they that make dams shall be grieved in soul.

The princes of Zoan are utter fools;
the wisest counsellors of Pharaoh are a senseless counsel;
how can ye say unto Pharaoh:
‘I am the son of the wise, the son of ancient kings’?

Where are they, then, thy wise men?
And let them tell thee now;
and let them know what The Eternal One of hosts hath purposed concerning Egypt.

The princes of Zoan are become fools, the princes of Noph are deceived;
they have caused Egypt to go astray, that are the corner-stone of her tribes.

The Eternal One hath mingled within her a spirit of dizziness;
and they have caused Egypt to stagger in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit.

Neither shall there be for Egypt any work, which head or tail, palm-branch or rush, may do.

In that day shall Egypt be like unto women;
and it shall tremble and fear because of the shaking of the hand of The Eternal One of hosts, which He shaketh over it.

And the land of Judah shall become a terror unto Egypt, whensoever one maketh mention thereof to it;
it shall be afraid, because of the purpose of The Eternal One of hosts, which He purposeth against it. {S}

{ס}
18 In that day there shall be five cities in the land of Egypt that speak the language of Canaan, and swear to The Eternal One of hosts;
one shall be called the city of destruction. {S}

In that day shall there be an altar to The Eternal One in the midst of the land of Egypt, and a pillar at the border thereof to The Eternal One.

And it shall be for a sign and for a witness unto The Eternal One of hosts in the land of Egypt;
for they shall cry unto The Eternal One because of the oppressors, and He will send them a saviour, and a defender, who will deliver them.

And The Eternal One shall make Himself known to Egypt, and the Egyptians shall know The Eternal One in that day;
yea, they shall worship with sacrifice and offering, and shall vow a vow unto The Eternal One, and shall perform it.

And The Eternal One will smite Egypt, smiting and healing;
and they shall return unto The Eternal One, and He will be entreated of them, and will heal them. {S}

In that day shall there be a highway out of Egypt to Assyria, and the Assyrian shall come into Egypt, and the Egyptian into Assyria;
and the Egyptians shall worship with the Assyrians. {S}

In that day shall Israel be the third with Egypt and with Assyria, a blessing in the midst of the earth;

for that The Eternal One of hosts hath blessed him, saying:
‘Blessed be Egypt My people and Assyria the work of My hands, and Israel Mine inheritance.’ {S}

In the year that Tartan came into Ashdod, when Sargon the king of Assyria sent him, and he fought against Ashdod and took it;

at that time The Eternal One spoke by Isaiah the son of Amoz, saying:
‘Go, and loose the sackcloth from off thy loins, and put thy shoe from off thy foot.’
And he did so, walking naked and barefoot. {S}

And The Eternal One said:
‘Like as My servant Isaiah hath walked naked and barefoot to be for three years a sign and a wonder upon Egypt and upon Ethiopia,

so shall the king of Assyria lead away the captives of Egypt, and the exiles of Ethiopia, young and old, naked and barefoot, and with buttocks uncovered, to the shame of Egypt.

And they shall be dismayed and ashamed, because of Ethiopia their expectation, and of Egypt their glory.

And the inhabitant of this coast-land shall say in that day:
Behold, such is our expectation, whither we fled for help to be delivered from the king of Assyria;
and how shall we escape?’ {P}

The burden of the wilderness of the sea.
As whirlwinds in the South sweeping on, it cometh from the wilderness, from a dreadful land.

A grievous vision is declared unto me:
‘The treacherous dealer dealeth treacherously, and the spoiler spoileth.
Go up, O Elam!
besiege, O Media!
All the sighing thereof have I made to cease.’

Therefore are my loins filled with convulsion;
pangs have taken hold upon me, as the pangs of a woman in travail;
I am bent so that I cannot hear;
I am affrighted so that I cannot see.

My heart is bewildered, terror hath overwhelmed me;
the twilight that I longed for hath been turned for me into trembling.

They prepare the table, they light the lamps, they eat, they drink–
‘Rise up, ye princes, anoint the shield.’ {S}

For thus hath My Savior said unto me:
Go, set a watchman;
let him declare what he seeth!

And when he seeth a troop, horsemen by pairs, a troop of asses, a troop of camels, he shall hearken diligently with much heed.

And he cried as a lion:
‘Upon the watch-tower, My Savior, I stand continually in the daytime, and I am set in my ward all the nights.’

And, behold, there came a troop of men, horsemen by pairs.
And he spoke and said:
‘Fallen, fallen is Babylon;
and all the graven images of her mighty ones are broken unto the ground.’

O thou my threshing, and the winnowing of my floor, that which I have heard from The Eternal One of hosts, the Savior of Israel, have I declared unto you. {P}

The burden of Dumah.
One calleth unto me out of Seir:
‘Watchman, what of the night?
Watchman, what of the night?’

The watchman said:
‘The morning cometh, and also the night–
if ye will inquire, inquire ye;
return, come.’ {P}

The burden upon Arabia.
In the thickets in Arabia shall ye lodge, O ye caravans of Dedanites.

Unto him that is thirsty bring ye water!
The inhabitants of the land of Tema did meet the fugitive with his bread.

For they fled away from the swords, from the drawn sword, and from the bent bow, and from the grievousness of war. {S}

For thus hath My Savior said unto me:
‘Within a year, according to the years of a hireling, and all the glory of Kedar shall fail;

and the residue of the number of the archers, the mighty men of the sons of Kedar, shall be diminished;
for The Eternal One, the the Savior of Israel, hath spoken it.’ {S}

In the beginning the Savior created the heaven and the earth.

And the earth was unformed and void, and darkness was upon the face of the deep;
and the spirit of the Savior hovered over the face of the waters.

And the Savior said:
‘Let there be light.’
And there was light.

And the Savior saw the light, that it was good;
and the Savior divided the light from the darkness.

And the Savior called the light Day, and the darkness He called Night.
And there was evening and there was morning, one day. {P}

And the Savior said:
‘Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.’

And the Savior made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament;
and it was so.

And the Savior called the firmament Heaven.
And there was evening and there was morning, a second day. {P}

And the Savior said:
‘Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear.’
And it was so.

And the Savior called the dry land Earth, and the gathering together of the waters called He Seas;
and the Savior saw that it was good.

And the Savior said:
‘Let the earth put forth grass, herb yielding seed, and fruit-tree bearing fruit after its kind, wherein is the seed thereof, upon the earth.’
And it was so.

And the earth brought forth grass, herb yielding seed after its kind, and tree bearing fruit, wherein is the seed thereof, after its kind;
and the Savior saw that it was good.

And there was evening and there was morning, a third day. {P}

And the Savior said:
‘Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night;
and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days and years;

and let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth.’
And it was so.

And the Savior made the two great lights:
the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night;
and the stars.

And the Savior set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

and to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness;
and the Savior saw that it was good.

And there was evening and there was morning, a fourth day. {P}

And the Savior said:
‘Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let fowl fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.’

And the Savior created the great sea-monsters, and every living creature that creepeth, wherewith the waters swarmed, after its kind, and every winged fowl after its kind;
and the Savior saw that it was good.

And the Savior blessed them, saying:
‘Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.’

And there was evening and there was morning, a fifth day. {P}

And the Savior said:
‘Let the earth bring forth the living creature after its kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after its kind.’
And it was so.

And the Savior made the beast of the earth after its kind, and the cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the ground after its kind;
and the Savior saw that it was good.

And the Savior said:
‘Let us make man in our image, after our likeness;
and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.’

And the Savior created man in His own image, in the image of the Savior created He him;
male and female created He them.

And the Savior blessed them;
and the Savior said unto them:
‘Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it;
and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that creepeth upon the earth.’

And the Savior said:
‘Behold, I have given you every herb yielding seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed–
to you it shall be for food;

and to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is a living soul, [I have given] every green herb for food.’
And it was so.

And the Savior saw every thing that He had made, and, behold, it was very good.
And there was evening and there was morning, the sixth day. {P}

And the heaven and the earth were finished, and all the host of them.

And on the seventh day the Savior finished His work which He had made;
and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made.

And the Savior blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it;
because that in it He rested from all His work which the Savior in creating had made. {P}

These are the generations of the heaven and of the earth when they were created, in the day that The Eternal One the Savior made earth and heaven.

No shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet sprung up;
for The Eternal One the Savior had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there was not a man to till the ground;

but there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the ground.

Then The Eternal One the Savior formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life;
and man became a living soul.

And The Eternal One the Savior planted a garden eastward, in Eden;
and there He put the man whom He had formed.

And out of the ground made The Eternal One the Savior to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for food;
the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the knowledge of good and evil.

And a river went out of Eden to water the garden;
and from thence it was parted, and became four heads.

The name of the first is Pishon;
that is it which compasseth the whole land of Havilah, where there is gold;

and the gold of that land is good;
there is bdellium and the onyx stone.

And the name of the second river is Gihon;
the same is it that compasseth the whole land of Cush.

And the name of the third river is Tigris;
that is it which goeth toward the east of Asshur.
And the fourth river is the Euphrates.

And The Eternal One the Savior took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and to keep it.

And The Eternal One the Savior commanded the man, saying:
‘Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat;

but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, thou shalt not eat of it;
for in the day that thou eatest thereof thou shalt surely die.’

And The Eternal One the Savior said:
‘It is not good that the man should be alone;
I will make him a help meet for him.’

And out of the ground The Eternal One the Savior formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of the air;
and brought them unto the man to see what he would call them;
and whatsoever the man would call every living creature, that was to be the name thereof.

And the man gave names to all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field;
but for Adam there was not found a help meet for him.

And The Eternal One the Savior caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept;
and He took one of his ribs, and closed up the place with flesh instead thereof.

And the rib, which The Eternal One the Savior had taken from the man, made He a woman, and brought her unto the man.

And the man said:
‘This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh;
she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.’

Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife, and they shall be one flesh.

And they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.

And the serpent was more subtle than any beast of the field which The Eternal One the Savior had made.
And he said unto the woman:
‘Yea, hath the Savior said:
Ye shall not eat of any tree of the garden?’

And the woman said unto the serpent:
‘Of the fruit of the trees of the garden we may eat;

but of the fruit of the tree which is in the midst of the garden, the Savior hath said:
Ye shall not eat of it, neither shall ye touch it, lest ye die.’

And the serpent said unto the woman:
‘Ye shall not surely die;

for the Savior doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as the Savior, knowing good and evil.’

And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat;
and she gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.

And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked;
and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves girdles.

And they heard the voice of The Eternal One the Savior walking in the garden toward the cool of the day;
and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of The Eternal One the Savior amongst the trees of the garden.

And The Eternal One the Savior called unto the man, and said unto him:
‘Where art thou?’

And he said:
‘I heard Thy voice in the garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked;
and I hid myself.’

And He said:
‘Who told thee that thou wast naked?
Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat?’

And the man said:
‘The woman whom Thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.’

And The Eternal One the Savior said unto the woman:
‘What is this thou hast done?’
And the woman said:
‘The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.’

And The Eternal One the Savior said unto the serpent:
‘Because thou hast done this, cursed art thou from among all cattle, and from among all beasts of the field;
upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all the days of thy life.

And I will put enmity between thee and the woman, and between thy seed and her seed;
they shall bruise thy head, and thou shalt bruise their heel.’ {S}

Unto the woman He said:
‘I will greatly multiply thy pain and thy travail;
in pain thou shalt bring forth children;
and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee.’ {S}

And unto Adam He said:
‘Because thou hast hearkened unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded thee, saying:
Thou shalt not eat of it;
cursed is the ground for thy sake; in toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life.

Thorns also and thistles shall it bring forth to thee;
and thou shalt eat the herb of the field.

In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou return unto the ground;
for out of it wast thou taken;
for dust thou art, and unto dust shalt thou return.’

And the man called his wife’s name Eve;
because she was the mother of all living.

And The Eternal One the Savior made for Adam and for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them. {P}

And The Eternal One the Savior said:
‘Behold, the man is become as one of us, to know good and evil;
and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take also of the tree of life, and eat, and live for ever.’

Therefore The Eternal One the Savior sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken.

So He drove out the man;
and He placed at the east of the garden of Eden the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way to the tree of life. {S}

And the man knew Eve his wife;
and she conceived and bore Cain, and said:
‘I have gotten a man with the help of The Eternal One.’

And again she bore his brother Abel.
And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering unto The Eternal One.

And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof.
And The Eternal One had respect unto Abel and to his offering;

but unto Cain and to his offering He had not respect.
And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance fell.

And The Eternal One said unto Cain:
‘Why art thou wroth?
and why is thy countenance fallen?

If thou doest well, shall it not be lifted up?
and if thou doest not well, sin coucheth at the door;
and unto thee is its desire, but thou mayest rule over it.’

And Cain spoke unto Abel his brother.
And it came to pass, when they were in the field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

And The Eternal One said unto Cain:
‘Where is Abel thy brother?’
And he said:
‘I know not;
am I my brother’s keeper?’

And He said:
‘What hast thou done?
the voice of thy brother’s blood crieth unto Me from the ground.

And now cursed art thou from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother’s blood from thy hand.

When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength;
a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth.’

And Cain said unto The Eternal One:
‘My punishment is greater than I can bear.

Behold, Thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the land;
and from Thy face shall I be hid;
and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth;
and it will come to pass, that whosoever findeth me will slay me.’

And The Eternal One said unto him:
‘Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.’
And The Eternal One set a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.

And Cain went out from the presence of The Eternal One, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden.

And Cain knew his wife;
and she conceived, and bore Enoch;
and he builded a city, and called the name of the city after the name of his son Enoch.

And unto Enoch was born Irad;
and Irad begot Mehujael;
and Mehujael begot Methushael;
and Methushael begot Lamech.

And Lamech took unto him two wives;
the name of one was Adah, and the name of the other Zillah.

And Adah bore Jabal;
he was the father of such as dwell in tents and have cattle.

And his brother’s name was Jubal;
he was the father of all such as handle the harp and pipe.

And Zillah, she also bore Tubal-cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron;
and the sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.

And Lamech said unto his wives:
Adah and Zillah, hear my voice;
ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my speech;
for I have slain a man for wounding me, and a young man for bruising me;

If Cain shall be avenged sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold.

And Adam knew his wife again;
and she bore a son, and called his name Seth:
‘for the Savior hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel;
for Cain slew him.’

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son;
and he called his name Enosh;
then began men to call upon the name of The Eternal One. {S}

This is the book of the generations of Adam.
In the day that the Savior created man, in the likeness of the Savior made He him;

male and female created He them, and blessed them, and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created.

And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begot a son in his own likeness, after his image;
and called his name Seth.

And the days of Adam after he begot Seth were eight hundred years;
and he begot sons and daughters.

And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years;
and he died. {S}

And Seth lived a hundred and five years, and begot Enosh.

And Seth lived after he begot Enosh eight hundred and seven years, and begot sons and daughters.

And all the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years;
and he died. {S}

And Enosh lived ninety years, and begot Kenan.

And Enosh lived after he begot Kenan eight hundred and fifteen years, and begot sons and daughters.

And all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years;
and he died. {S}

And Kenan lived seventy years, and begot Mahalalel.

And Kenan lived after he begot Mahalalel eight hundred and forty years, and begot sons and daughters.

And all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years;
and he died. {S}

And Mahalalel lived sixty and five years, and begot Jared.

And Mahalalel lived after he begot Jared eight hundred and thirty years, and begot sons and daughters.

And all the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred ninety and five years;
and he died.{S}

And Jared lived a hundred sixty and two years, and begot Enoch.

And Jared lived after he begot Enoch eight hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and two years;
and he died. {S}

And Enoch lived sixty and five years, and begot Methuselah.

And Enoch walked with the Savior after he begot Methuselah three hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.

And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty and five years.

And Enoch walked with the Savior, and he was not;
for the Savior took him. {S}

And Methuselah lived a hundred eighty and seven years, and begot Lamech.

And Methuselah lived after he begot Lamech seven hundred eighty and two years, and begot sons and daughters.

And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred sixty and nine years;
and he died.{S}

And Lamech lived a hundred eighty and two years, and begot a son.

And he called his name Noah, saying:
‘This same shall comfort us in our work and in the toil of our hands, which cometh from the ground which The Eternal One hath cursed.’

And Lamech lived after he begot Noah five hundred ninety and five years, and begot sons and daughters.

And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy and seven years;
and he died. {S}

And Noah was five hundred years old;
and Noah begot Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,

that the sons of the Savior saw the daughters of men that they were fair;
and they took them wives, whomsoever they chose.

And The Eternal One said:
‘My spirit shall not abide in man for ever, for that he also is flesh;
therefore shall his days be a hundred and twenty years.’

The Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of the mighty ones came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them;
the same were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown. {P}

And The Eternal One saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.

And sighed The Eternal One because He had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart,

and The Eternal One said:
‘I will blot out man whom I have created from the face of the earth;
both man, and beast, and creeping thing, and fowl of the air;
for it repenteth Me that I have made them.’

But Noah found favor in the eyes of The Eternal One. {P}

These are the generations of Noah.
Noah was in his generations a man righteous and whole-hearted;
Noah walked with the Savior.

And Noah begot three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

And the earth was corrupt before the Savior, and the earth was filled with violence.

And the Savior saw the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt;
for all flesh had corrupted their way upon the earth. {S}

And the Savior said unto Noah:
‘The end of all flesh is come before Me;
for the earth is filled with violence through them;
and, behold, I will destroy them with the earth.

Make thee an ark of gopher wood;
with rooms shalt thou make the ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.

And this is how thou shalt make it:
the length of the ark three hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty cubits.

A light shalt thou make to the ark, and to a cubit shalt thou finish it upward;
and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof;
with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.

And I, behold, I do bring the flood of waters upon the earth, to destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven;
every thing that is in the earth shall perish.

But I will establish My covenant with thee;
and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons’ wives with thee.

And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring into the ark, to keep them alive with thee;
they shall be male and female.

Of the fowl after their kind, and of the cattle after their kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every sort shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.

And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and gather it to thee;
and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.’

Thus did Noah;
according to all that the Savior commanded him, so did he.

And The Eternal One said unto Noah:
‘Come thou and all thy house into the ark;
for thee have I seen righteous before Me in this generation.

Of every clean beast thou shalt take to thee seven and seven, each with his mate;
and of the beasts that are not clean two [and two], each with his mate;

of the fowl also of the air, seven and seven, male and female;
to keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.

For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty days and forty nights;
and every living substance that I have made will I blot out from off the face of the earth.’

And Noah did according unto all that The Eternal One commanded him.

And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.

And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons’ wives with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood.

Of clean beasts, and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of every thing that creepeth upon the ground,

there went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, male and female, as the Savior commanded Noah.

And it came to pass after the seven days, that the waters of the flood were upon the earth.

In the six hundredth year of Noah’s life, in the second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day were all the fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.

And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.

In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah’s wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark;

they, and every beast after its kind, and all the cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth after its kind, and every fowl after its kind, every bird of every sort.

And they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh wherein is the breath of life.

And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh, as the Savior commanded him;
and The Eternal One shut him in.

And the flood was forty days upon the earth;
and the waters increased, and bore up the ark, and it was lifted up above the earth.

And the waters prevailed, and increased greatly upon the earth;
and the ark went upon the face of the waters.

And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the earth;
and all the high mountains that were under the whole heaven were covered.

Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail;
and the mountains were covered.

And all flesh perished that moved upon the earth, both fowl, and cattle, and beast, and every swarming thing that swarmeth upon the earth, and every man;

all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life, whatsoever was in the dry land, died.

And He blotted out every living substance which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and creeping thing, and fowl of the heaven;
and they were blotted out from the earth;
and Noah only was left, and they that were with him in the ark.

And the waters prevailed upon the earth a hundred and fifty days.

130 Numbers 17 8/6

And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:

‘Get you up from among this community, that I may consume them in a moment.’
And they fell upon their faces.

And Moses said unto Aaron:
‘Take thy fire-pan, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the community, and make atonement for them;
for there is wrath gone out from the LORD:
the plague is begun.’

And Aaron took as Moses spoke, and ran into the midst of the assembly;
and, behold, the plague was begun among the people;
and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people.

And he stood between the dead and the living;
and the plague was stayed.

Now they that died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of Korah.

And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tent of meeting, and the plague was stayed. {P}

And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying:

‘Speak unto the sons of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers’ house, of all their princes according to their fathers’ houses, twelve rods;
thou shalt write every man’s name upon his rod.

And thou shalt write Aaron’s name upon the rod of Levi, for there shall be one rod for the head of their fathers’ houses.

And thou shalt lay them up in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you.

And it shall come to pass, that the man whom I shall choose, his rod shall bud;
and I will make to cease from Me the murmurings of the sons of Israel, which they murmur against you.’

And Moses spoke unto the sons of Israel;
and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers’ houses, even twelve rods;
and the rod of Aaron was among their rods.

And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tent of the testimony.

And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses went into the tent of the testimony;
and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and bore ripe almonds.

And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the sons of Israel;
and they looked, and took every man his rod. {P}
